The Syrian Civil War rages on and hundreds of thousands have already met their end. The line between combatant and civilian is traced finer with each passing day as “rebel” groups blend in with the general populace. The pace of this war, however, is about to expedite rapidly.
An ancient mechanism able to turn the tides of battle has been unearthed. A selected wielder will be sent to bring an end to this nearly decade-long conflict. Eighteen-year-old Vasily Zima of Suvorov Military Academy, the top school of its kind in Moscow, has been prematurely called to serve his nation and its allies in this desperate time.

The Dark Shroud is certainly a story for those who have a fascination with an evil protagonist. The protagonist, Vasily starts out as a likeable persona, but as one delves further into the story-- one will catch glimpses into the nature of a young man who wouldn't bat an eye at the death of innocent people as long as he fulfills his objectives. We get a balanced scale of cruelty and humanity for the character that I can't help but want to further understand and prod deeper into their idealogies and psyche. The premise of finding an ancient artifact that turns the tides of a battle was presented well and something that is placable for people who find it hard to grasp or appreciate sci-fi or fantastical elements merged with realistic settings. The Dark Shroud is a well-written and alluring story that I'm looking forward to continue reading!
