Chapter 10 - The Name of The Shadow

The trees exploded.

Musha heard the branches before they broke.

A rush of air.

Leaves tearing.

Stone grinding beneath something impossibly heavy.

She moved.

A blur of movement tore through the space where her head had been.

Musha ducked.

Something struck the ground behind her.

BOOM.

The road cracked.

Hana screamed.

"Musha!"

"I'm here!"

Musha rolled away and came to her feet.

Her heart hammered.

She listened.

Nothing.

No heartbeat.

No breathing.

No footsteps.

Only the faint scrape of something moving across the earth.

Katsurane stepped in front of her.

"Stay behind me."

Musha tightened her grip on her staff.

"What is it?"

"I don't know."

"You're lying."

"I don't know what it is."

His voice was different.

Not guarded.

Terrified.

Musha had never heard Katsurane sound like that.

Then the stranger spoke.

"You really don't know."

Its voice came from everywhere at once.

Deep.

Calm.

Almost amused.

Katsurane raised his sword.

"Show yourself."

A figure stepped from the trees.

Musha couldn't see it.

But she felt it.

Tall.

Light on its feet.

Almost unnaturally still.

Its heartbeat was so faint that she couldn't distinguish it from the wind.

Then it spoke.

"Eight years."

Katsurane's sword tightened in his hand.

"Eight years since Aiko disappeared."

Musha's breathing stopped.

The figure continued.

"And eight years since we lost the girl."

Musha stepped forward.

"You knew my mother."

"Yes."

"What happened to her?"

The figure laughed softly.

"You ask that as though you believe the answer will comfort you."

Musha's jaw tightened.

"Tell me."

The figure moved.

Katsurane attacked.

Steel struck something.

CLANG!

The force sent Katsurane sliding several feet across the road.

Musha gasped.

Katsurane recovered immediately.

He attacked again.

The stranger dodged.

Again.

Again.

Musha listened to the fight.

Katsurane's breathing.

His feet.

The sword.

The stranger.

Something was wrong.

The stranger wasn't fighting like a normal swordsman.

There was no wasted movement.

No hesitation.

No fear.

It moved as though it already knew where Katsurane would strike.

Then—

CLANG!

Katsurane's sword flew from his hand.

"Katsurane!"

The stranger appeared beside him.

A blade stopped against his throat.

"Still protecting her."

Katsurane froze.

Musha felt the stranger's attention shift toward her.

"Just like Aiko."

Musha stepped forward.

"Don't touch him."

The stranger smiled.

"There's the voice."

Musha's hand burned.

White light flickered around her fingers.

The stranger stopped.

For the first time, its calmness disappeared.

"…So it's true."

Musha raised her hand.

"What?"

"The awakening."

The stranger slowly lowered its blade.

"Your mother sealed it."

Musha froze.

"What did she seal?"

The stranger looked toward her palm.

"The thing inside you."

Katsurane's voice became sharp.

"Don't listen."

Musha turned toward him.

"Why?"

"Because it wants you afraid."

The stranger laughed.

"You're the one who should be afraid."

Katsurane's face hardened.

"You don't know what you're talking about."

"I know exactly what I'm talking about."

The stranger pointed toward Musha.

"I was there."

Musha's heart stopped.

"At my birth?"

"Yes."

Her fingers trembled.

"What happened?"

The stranger was silent for a moment.

Then:

"Your mother screamed."

Musha swallowed.

"Why?"

"Because they were going to take you."

"Who?"

"The Crimson Shadows."

Musha remembered the masked warriors.

"But you aren't one of them."

"No."

"Then who are you?"

The stranger didn't answer.

Instead, it said:

"Your mother begged them to let you live."

Musha's throat tightened.

"She begged?"

"Yes."

"She was a queen."

"She was a mother first."

The words struck harder than Musha expected.

The stranger continued.

"She knew what you carried."

Musha shook her head.

"I don't carry anything."

The stranger smiled.

"You still believe that."

The white light around Musha's hand brightened.

"Tell me."

"You want the truth?"

"Yes."

"Then ask the right question."

Musha's breathing became unsteady.

"What question?"

The stranger looked directly at her.

"Why were you born blind?"

Musha froze.

The world seemed to stop.

Katsurane's expression changed.

Hana covered her mouth.

Musha's fingers tightened.

"My blindness?"

"Yes."

"My mother didn't give me blindness."

The stranger tilted its head.

"No."

"Then who did?"

The stranger smiled.

"You still don't understand."

Musha stepped forward.

"Then explain!"

The white light around her body surged.

The stranger took a step backward.

"Your blindness wasn't a punishment."

Musha's breath caught.

"It was a seal."

Silence.

The mountain pulsed.

THUM.

Musha stared into the darkness.

"A seal?"

"To keep you from seeing what lives inside you."

Katsurane shook his head.

"Enough."

The stranger ignored him.

"Your mother knew that if you could see the world normally…"

It paused.

"…the Shadow would see the world through you."

Musha's mind raced.

"So my blindness…"

"Was protection."

She touched her face.

For eight years, she had wondered what it meant to live without sight.

She had wondered whether her mother had known.

Whether her mother had been afraid of her.

Whether something was wrong with her.

And now—

She didn't know what hurt more.

The truth.

Or how long everyone had hidden it.

Musha turned toward Katsurane.

"Is it true?"

He didn't answer.

"Katsurane."

His eyes lowered.

"Yes."

The word broke something inside her.

"You knew?"

"Yes."

"How long?"

"Since the night you were born."

Musha's voice became smaller.

"You watched me grow up knowing that?"

"I watched you grow up knowing you deserved a life before you ever had to carry this."

Her anger rose.

"You lied to me."

"Yes."

"You let me believe I was broken."

Katsurane's expression cracked.

"I never thought you were broken."

"You never told me the truth!"

"Because your mother asked me not to."

Musha shouted:

"She died!"

The village fell silent.

"She died and you still kept her secrets!"

Katsurane stared at her.

"I promised her."

Musha's voice trembled.

"You promised her."

"Yes."

"And what about me?"

Katsurane couldn't answer.

Musha's eyes filled with tears.

"What did you promise me?"

Nothing.

That silence hurt more than an answer.

The stranger spoke softly.

"Now you understand."

Musha turned toward it.

"What?"

"They all chose what you were allowed to know."

The black edges returned around the white light.

"You were hidden."

The darkness spread.

"Protected."

A little farther.

"Controlled."

Musha's breathing became faster.

"Musha."

Katsurane stepped toward her.

"Don't listen to it."

"Why?"

"Because anger is what it wants."

Musha clenched her fists.

The darkness crawled up her arms.

The stranger smiled.

"Yes."

Katsurane shouted:

"Musha!"

The mountain answered.

THUM.

The ground cracked.

Musha screamed.

The white light erupted.

Black flooded through it.

The air around her twisted.

Leaves rose from the ground.

Hana was thrown backward.

Katsurane planted his feet.

"Musha!"

She couldn't hear him.

She was somewhere else.

Inside herself.

She saw Aiko.

Not as a queen.

Not as a legend.

As a mother.

Holding her.

Crying.

Blood covered her white clothing.

A stone rested against the newborn Musha's chest.

It glowed.

White.

Aiko whispered:

"My little shadow."

Musha reached toward the memory.

"Mother…"

Aiko looked directly at her.

For one impossible moment—

Musha felt seen.

Then Aiko spoke.

"Forgive me."

The memory shattered.

Musha screamed.

The black shadow exploded outward.

The stranger was thrown backward.

Katsurane dropped to one knee.

The entire village shook.

And then—

Silence.

Musha stood alone in the center of the road.

White light surrounded her.

Black curled around it.

Like two flames fighting over the same body.

The stranger slowly stood.

Its voice had changed.

"You don't know what you've become."

Musha breathed heavily.

"Then tell me."

The stranger looked toward her.

"The White Shadow doesn't belong to you."

Musha's eyes narrowed.

"What?"

"It never did."

"Then whose is it?"

The stranger smiled.

"Ask the mountain."

Musha turned.

The mountain stood in the distance.

Silent.

Waiting.

The voice came.

Not from the stranger.

Not from Katsurane.

From inside her.

Mine.

Musha froze.

The stranger stepped backward.

It heard nothing.

But Musha did.

Mine.

She whispered:

"Who are you?"

The answer came.

You.

Musha's heart pounded.

"No."

You have always been listening.

"I don't understand."

You have always been blind.

Musha touched her face.

Not because you were weak.

The white light grew stronger.

Because the world was too loud.

Musha remembered the mountain.

The heartbeat.

The voices.

The shapes.

Everything.

Your mother didn't give you the Shadow.

Musha swallowed.

She gave you time.

The voice faded.

Musha stood trembling.

Then she heard something behind her.

A sword being raised.

The stranger.

He was attacking again.

Musha turned.

Too late.

Katsurane moved.

He intercepted the strike.

CLANG!

The stranger's blade cut across Katsurane's shoulder.

Blood spilled.

"Katsurane!"

He staggered.

Musha's anger exploded.

The black shadow surged.

The stranger stopped.

For one moment, he looked terrified.

"No."

Musha stepped forward.

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

"You hurt him."

The darkness spread around her.

The stranger backed away.

"Control it."

Musha raised her hand.

"You're afraid."

The stranger's breathing changed.

"Don't."

"You're afraid of me."

"No."

Musha stepped closer.

"Then why are you running?"

The stranger attacked.

Musha didn't move.

She felt the blade.

The direction.

The weight.

The intent.

She turned her body slightly.

The sword missed.

Musha struck the stranger's chest with her palm.

The White Shadow exploded.

The stranger flew across the road.

He crashed into the shrine gate.

Wood shattered.

The symbol painted across it flared white.

The stranger stared at Musha.

She stood motionless.

The black around her slowly faded.

He whispered:

"She's stronger than Aiko."

Katsurane heard him.

Musha did too.

"What did you say?"

The stranger struggled to stand.

"Your mother could control the Shadow."

He looked at Musha.

"You…"

His voice trembled.

"…are becoming something else."

Musha took another step.

"Who sent you?"

He didn't answer.

"Who?"

The stranger looked toward the mountain.

"They're coming."

"Who?"

He smiled.

"You'll know."

Musha raised her hand.

The stranger suddenly reached for something beneath his clothing.

Katsurane shouted:

"Musha!"

A flash.

Smoke exploded across the road.

Musha coughed.

Hana screamed.

When the smoke cleared—

The stranger was gone.

Only a strip of black cloth remained on the ground.

Musha bent down and touched it.

There was a symbol stitched into it.

Not the Crimson Shadows.

Something different.

Older.

Her fingers traced its shape.

Katsurane approached.

His shoulder was bleeding.

Musha immediately turned toward him.

"You're hurt."

"I'll survive."

"You almost died."

"I've survived worse."

Musha looked at him.

"Who was he?"

Katsurane didn't answer.

She tightened her grip on the cloth.

"Who is coming?"

Still nothing.

Then the mountain shook.

THUM.

This time, the entire village heard it.

People screamed.

The shrine bell rang once.

GONG.

Then stopped.

Musha felt the mountain's presence again.

But it wasn't calling her.

It was warning her.

Her face changed.

"They're coming."

Katsurane looked at her.

"Who?"

Musha listened.

Beyond the forest.

Far beyond the village.

Hundreds of footsteps.

Not ten.

Not twenty.

Hundreds.

Her blood ran cold.

"They're not coming for the village."

Katsurane's expression hardened.

"Then what are they coming for?"

Musha looked toward the mountain.

The answer came from deep beneath it.

You.

She swallowed.

Then another voice joined it.

Aiko's voice.

Soft.

Broken.

Almost a whisper.

"Run, Musha."

Musha's heart stopped.

"Mother?"

Silence.

Then—

"Don't come home."

The mountain trembled violently.

Musha stared toward it.

For the first time, the voice beneath the mountain wasn't calling her closer.

It was afraid.

Katsurane stepped beside her.

"What did you hear?"

Musha looked at him.

Her voice was barely audible.

"My mother told me to run."

Katsurane's face went pale.

Then the mountain split.

A massive crack raced across its surface.

Something moved behind the stone.

Something enormous.

The villagers screamed.

Katsurane drew his sword.

Hana grabbed Musha's hand.

And deep beneath the mountain—

Something opened its eyes.

Musha felt its attention settle on her.

The voice whispered one final word.

"Found."

Musha tightened her grip on her staff.

The White Shadow flickered around her.

And somewhere beyond the forest, hundreds of footsteps began to run toward the village.
