[ONE HOUR LATER]
I regrouped with Kei and Arisu, all while trying to maintain a normal appearance.
"Lyssa? You took a while. Is everything okay?"
I nodded in response, trying to hide my anxiousness.
"Why wouldn't she be? She's basically invisible to everyone else." She said as she gazed at me sceptically.
Kei simply gazed at Arisu before speaking once again.
"We were worried that you ran off somewhere without us."
I tilted my head as I attempted to come up with an explanation.
"Well, I just saw this beautiful view and wanted to check it out!"
Arisu let out a slight giggle at my 'very' convincing explanation. I could tell that she wasn't entirely convinced, but she was willing to give me the benefit of the doubt.
"Really?" She asked sceptically.
"Yes, really. I wouldn't lie about something like that."
She scanned the area for a few seconds, and after a brief pause, she turned back to me with a determined look on her face.
"In that case, you should hurry up and take us there! I want to see this beautiful view for myself."
Kei didn't seem too thrilled about the idea. He crossed his arms over his chest and scowled at Arisu.
"I'd rather go back to the inn."
I couldn't help but let out a sigh.
"Actually, I want to know about that trinket you bought."
"And don't give some half-assed explanation." I added, knowing what Arisu was like. She had a tendency to gloss over details and leave out important information.
"I too want an explanation about that trinket." Kei chimed in.
Arisu puffed her cheeks in annoyance before speaking.
"I buy one trinket, and suddenly everyone wants to know."
I deadpanned her. Despite her protests, I knew that Arisu would eventually tell us what we wanted to know.
"You're probably the only one who knows what it does."
"Fine fine! Jeez, you two are impatient."
Arisu placed a hand on her hips before continuing.
"You see, this is an enchanted trinket called 'The Trinket of Tyranny'!"
Arisu announced with a flourish, holding up the small, ornate object. It was made of a red mineral—probably ruby or painite—and possibly obsidian.
Kei spoke up with concern; his words rang out clearly. I agreed with him; the name alone sounded ominous and dangerous.
"That sounds like it should be locked up in eternal flames forever."
Arisu, however, seemed unfazed by our reactions.
"That may be true, but it's not as bad as it sounds! This little thing is filled with magic, and it can do some pretty incredible things."
She hoped her words would be enough to convince us, but I simply gazed at Arisu before responding.
"It sounds like it's dangerous to—"
"It's perfectly safe!!" She quickly interrupted.
"I've used it before, and nothing bad happened."
Without hesitation, Kei added his intake.
"Sounds like a lie. You just bought it and haven't put it on once."
"Arisu, you can't just drop the 'The Trinket of Tyranny' bomb and expect us to brush it off. What does it do?" I asked.
Arisu let out a small chuckle and rolled her eyes in response to my comment.
"Oh, Lyssa, you have no idea what you're in for. This trinket isn't just about its name."
"Stop stalling, Arisu."
Kei's voice remained blank yet irritated at Arisu's stalling, his gaze fixed on the mysterious item that Arisu held in her hand.
"Ugh. Fine..."
Arisu began explaining the trinket's significance, but her explanation was so vague and half-assed that even the worst person didn't deserve to hear it.
The cold wind bit at my cheeks as Kei, Arisu, and I made our way back to the inn.
The streets were surprisingly empty, save for a few stray child-like humanoid cats prowling around.
My hand instinctively tightened around the trinket Arisu gave us, the small metallic sphere feeling heavier than it should.
"Can you believe her?"
"For something called 'The Trinket of Tyranny', she just dismisses it like it's nothing."
I whispered to Kei in frustration as Arisu walked, unaware, behind us.
"Maybe we should go back to Obirokuro Bomu." I suggested.
"There might be answers there."
Kei nodded; his gaze shifted to meet mine.
"We need to know what we're dealing with."
The door to the inn creaked open, and Arisu appeared, her smile strained.
She held out her hands, expecting the trinket.
"Lyssa, I'll keep it safe for now. Better if we all don't carry it around, right?"
Hesitating, I handed it over, but my doubts only grew as she tucked it away.
A nagging voice inside me whispered that we were making a mistake and that we needed to confront her about the truth.
"Look, Arisu." I began.
"You didn't tell us everything about this trinket—not like we could even understand what you were saying, but you didn't, did you? What's really going on?"
She expectedly grinned.
"I'll tell you when we reach Obirokuro Village. That's where you wanted your answers, right?"
She had listened to our conversation, which made our lives harder.
I sighed.
"You're impossible."
"Obirokuro Bomu it is then..." I continued.
Arisu didn't want to leave Mythril Haven yet. But Kei and I were insistent.
I urged.
"We have to get to Obirokuro Bomu Village. Lives are at stake."
Arisu tilted her head in confusion.
"What lives?"
I knew that wouldn't work, and I opened my mouth to respond, but before I could say a word, the world altered drastically. Everywhere I looked, I saw fires dancing and smoke rising; screams of fear and despair filled the air.
My mind was invaded by thoughts and visions of the destruction occurring all around me.
The cobblestone path twisted before me, undulating like a serpent.
I blinked hard, trying to force the street to be still, but the buildings loomed and leered, their windows now gaping leviathans full of gluttony.
"Lyssa?"
Kei's voice anchored me as I turned. Both she and Arisu watched me with concern.
"Are you alright?"
Arisu asked.
"You seem...distracted."
I shook my head, willing the phantoms away.
"I'm fine. Just tired, I suppose."
Arisu nodded, though her eyes remained wary. We continued on, the late afternoon sun casting long shadows that seemed to grasp at my heels.
I quickened my pace.
"Wait."
Arisu said, stopping abruptly.
"I really think we should stay here a bit longer. There's more to uncover in Mythril Haven—"
"I don't think we should." I interjected.
"Changing your mind already?" she quipped, a mischievous glint in her eyes.
"I agree with Lyssa, but why were you so quick to answer?"
Kei turned to me while speaking.
"No... Reason."
Kei gazed at me with a knowing gaze and sighed.
"Alright then..."
We reached the door of our shared room, contemplating the next course of action.
"We'll go back. Right, Arisu?*
Kei gazed sharply at her with the intent of dragging her back.
"Why?"
"You dragged us all the way here to a 'town' outside the outskirts; you bought some mysterious item called 'The Trinket of Tyranny.', and you won't even give a good explanation of what it does!"
I stopped realising that I was rambling on.
"...I... actually have no idea what it does."
[ONE MINUTE LATER]
"Mphmhf!!!"
Arisu's muffled exclamation echoed inside the inn as her hands were behind her back and her mouth was covered with a makeshift rope.
Kei, his expression impassive, stood nearby, ensuring she wouldn't attempt any sudden escape.
In a brisk movement, Kei, without a word, seized Arisu's arm and propelled her forward. "We're going."
"MphffhmmMM!!!"
The shadows appeared to bounce around us, their silent whispers adding an eerie undertone to our journey.
Arisu's eyes flickered with a mixture of annoyance and curiosity as Kei and I guided her through the labyrinthine alleys.
We eventually allowed Arisu to speak.
"Kei, are you sure about this?" Arisu's voice, now freed from its temporary confinement, held great vehemence.
As we wandered through the slightly packed streets, the world transformed again. They were getting more frequent and vivid.
In the midst of this spectral transformation, Kei's impassive expression betrayed no hint of surprise.
Arisu, her bound hands gesturing animatedly, seemed oblivious to the otherworldly display, caught in the ebb and flow of her own animated conversations.
In other words, only I could see them.
Oblivious to this, I asked.
"Hey, guys? Do... you see that?"
Arisu, still tied up, replied.
"See what?"
The air vibrated with an unsettling energy as we navigated the surreal town.
"It's like the world itself is in pain." I murmured, trying to make sense of the twisted reality.
"Pain? What are you talking about?"
Kei's eyes narrowed as he fixed his gaze on me, and I returned the gesture by locking my eyes on the hellish state of Mythril Haven.
I closed my eyes for a brief moment, and when I opened them again, everything had returned to its usual state.
"What the hell..." I murmured.
Arisu, still bound and seemingly unaffected by the bizarre occurrences, chimed in with her usual nonchalance.
"Seeing things? Lyssa, you're starting to sound crazier than usual."
I shot her a glare, frustration bubbling beneath the surface.
"This town is not what it seems. I saw and felt it."
"Lyssa, we're in a strange town filled with hybrids. Weird things happen. Maybe you're just not used to it yet."
Despite her dismissive tone, there was a flicker of concern in her eyes. Kei, however, remained analytical.
"Lyssa, are you sure it wasn't a momentary lapse? Stress and fatigue can play tricks on the mind."
"It wasn't a lapse. I could feel it. The town was... alive, but not in a good way."
In that pivotal moment, the transformations escalated, casting Mythril Haven into a distorted version of itself.
Buildings contorted, their shadows morphing into ominous shapes that seemed to writhe with unseen malevolence.
The air thickened with malice, pulsing with an unnerving energy that permeated everything around us.
Arisu and Kei remained oblivious, unaffected by the hellish changes.
"Guys, something is seriously wrong. Look around you. This town is not normal."
"You're definitely seeing things." Arisu said, still tied up.
"I'm telling you, this town is not normal."
Despite the obvious signs of danger, Arisu and Kei remained unaffected, oblivious to the hellish changes.
Arisu chuckled.
"You're turning into a conspiracy theorist, Lyssa."
I turned to Arisu immediately with suspicion.
"Arisu. Explain what that damned trinket does."
"What? Why? I already told you I have no idea."
She had probably been just as clueless as I was, but I couldn't help feeling annoyed at the situation.
"Did none of you see that?"
"No. What did you see?"
Kei chimed in.
I stayed quiet for a short while, trying to gather my thoughts before finally replying again.
"It's fine; let's just keep moving. It's not worth wasting any more time on."
I knew it wasn't smart to dismiss it, but I couldn't stay in this place any longer.
The fire in those visions was too much of a reminder.
I continued our journey towards the entrance gate to Mythril Haven. I could feel their stares crawling up my back.
I could tell Kei began dragging Arisu with her as he followed me through the windy streets.
"Lys, seriously, what's going on?"
Arisu's voice held a tinge of concern, a departure from her usual carefree demeanour.
I sighed, grappling with the right words.
"I don't know."
Arisu exchanged a puzzled glance with Kei, who remained unfazed.
"I didn't see anything." Kei stated flatly.
"Neither did I." Arisu added with a hint of annoyance in her tone.
"Lyssa, are you sure you're not just tired? Maybe your powers are playing tricks on you."
"I'm not tired, and this has nothing to do with my powers. I've never experienced anything like this before."
The dismissive tone fueled my frustration.
Kei's analytical gaze bore into me.
"Lyssa, you need to consider the possibility that what you saw wasn't real. Perception can be deceptive, especially in a place like this."
His words, though logical, grated against the unsettling feeling in my gut.
"I know what I saw, Kei. It wasn't a figment of my imagination."
Arisu, ever the sceptic, rolled her eyes.
"Lys, this is getting absurd. Mythril Haven is a strange town filled with hybrids. Weird things happen here. Maybe you're just not used to it yet."
Despite her dismissive words, there was a flicker of concern in her eyes. I couldn't blame them for doubting; after all, my revelations sounded like the ramblings of a conspiracy theorist.
As we reached the entrance gate, I turned to face them, my unease lingering like an unspoken truth between us.
"Look, I can't explain it fully, but something is off about this town. Whether you believe me or not, we need to proceed with caution."
As we neared the exit gate, the distorted reality persisted, leaving me very confused.
Upon reaching the gate, Mythril Haven's abrupt shift caught me off guard.
The contorted buildings snapped back to their normal state, the shadows retreating to their usual positions.
The once-ominous energy dissipated, replaced by the calm that had characterised the town moments before.
Arisu's attempts to downplay the significance of the trinket only fueled my suspicions. I turned to her, my gaze piercing through the remnants of doubt.
"Arisu, something strange is happening. You have to acknowledge it."
She sighed, her usual carefree demeanour giving way to a reluctant admission. "Fine, Lyssa. I may not see what you see, but I'll believe you."
That was easier than I thought.
I took a good look back at Mythril Haven't before turning back to the world beyond the gates.
A chilling whisper echoed in the air, and the celestial lights flickered with an unsettling rhythm.
Kei and Arisu stood there, bewilderment etched across their faces, lost in the inexplicable scene before them. Yet, amid the perplexity enveloping them, I alone discerned the ethereal glow of those celestial lights.
