In Altea, magic comes from unseen deities. All those they deem worthy are granted magical abilities; the more devoted they are the more power they're granted. This power imbalance is obviously dangerous, something all according to plan of the gods who revel in causing mayhem.
There are whispers in closed circles about ignoring the gods and seeking paths without them. Their own existence fuels these forward, according to these whisperers, almighty gods would've surely snuffed them out and therefore the gods aren't as mighty as they appear.
Magi, a group of people that did not require the power of the gods to utter spells and wield their birth given mana. They were a civilization that once ruled the continent of Volta, lived in the city of Zastile; but no more than a thousand years ago, a war was waged between the Magi and the gods... and they all perished.
