Chapter 9 - Signs

His father nodded approvingly.

"I'll wire the funds to your bank account soon. I wish you good luck, son. Also, I would like it if you could make amends with your brother. I don't want to see this family break apart because of your previous conflicts."

His father added sternly. Anthony thanked his father and left the office. The Secretary smiled and waved goodbye as Anthony picked up Jordan and left the building.

A fire seemed to crawl into his veins. He felt determined to win this challenge that his father had set before him. Anthony burst out the door, a determined look on his face, with Jordan following shortly after.

"I'll go write up my resignation letter. Here's my phone number, if you need me you can contact me there... usually. Well, gotta go, Boss!"

Jordan smiled brightly and walked away to find his car in a nearby parking garage.

Anthony called for an Uber through his phone. Not too long after, a black SUV drove up to the office building and drove Anthony back to his penthouse. Anthony looked out the window and continued to develop a mental map of what he would do for his rise to glory. As he continued his contemplation, his friends had started to notice that he was gone.

A look of panic flashed across Zhao Chun's face as she started to look in every nook and cranny for any signs of Anthony. She tried calling Anthony, but Anthony's phone was off at the time, making her even more worried. Just as she was about to try calling the police station, Ba Gao walked in holding a glazed donut in his hand with a letter in the other. Ba Gao had just remembered that he had seen a letter stuck to the fridge when he had started his search for nutrition.

Seeing Zhao Chun's panicked state, he decided to grab it. As his fingers were caked in glaze, the letter was quite sticky when it came into Zhao Chun's hands. Finding a nearby letter opener, Zhao Chun opened the letter quickly and started to read it, intently. After finishing her in-depth reading of the letter, she released a breath that she had been unconsciously holding. She placed the letter on the table and laid back in the chair, a relieved expression clearly displayed on her face.

Meanwhile, on the top floor of a major hunter's association, one of the bigwigs of the entire United States, the association President was reading a report that had just been sent in. His eyes revealed a look of horror and anxiety. The report was on the raid team's wipeout that had been recently broadcasted upon the TV.

Silently, he placed the report on the table, slowly and then spun his executive's chair towards the glass wall behind him. He stood up and put his hand on the glass casting his gaze upon the entirety of the city. He took a deep breath let out an elongated sigh. His hunter's association, as well as the other 9 in the United States of America, had the weighted and much-undesired responsibility of maintaining the peace and security of the country against the foreign invaders or Demons.

Suddenly, a knock could be heard and the twisting of a doorknob as the door to his office opened, disturbing him from his restless thoughts. The association President sat down in his chair and turned around to find an unexpected guest.

"Well isn't it a surprise to meet you here, Francis Smithson, our top hunter himself."

Francis curtly nodded his head in acknowledgment and sat down in the chair opposing the association president.

"What brings you here?"

A serious expression appeared on the Association President's face. He waited expectantly for a response and wasn't disappointed when the hunter replied a few moments later.

"It's about the gates. More violent, hard to control, ones have started popping up recently as you have seen from the reports."

The Association President nodded his head slowly, his eyes narrowed a bit as if he was expecting the bad news that was to come. Francis took a deep breath and after a few moments of hesitation, said what was needed.

"We need to ask Russia for support."

The Association President's face immediately shrank. Russia and the United States had had a bad history together, despite the recent efforts to heal the wounds, deep-seated aggression from history was always present in the background at every diplomatic meeting.

As the Association President was busy wracking his mind for a decision, Anthony had finally reached his home. He briskly walked past the guards, flashing his identification card. As he waited in the elevator, he started to unconsciously tap his feet. His mind was filled with worried thoughts on how his friends would react with his abrupt leave. He tried to assuage his mind with statements such as, "It's, okay. I left them a letter." and "I was only gone for a short while."

But it was rather ineffective, as Anthony's continued to mount and his worried thoughts multiplied. As his worries were about to overwhelm him, the elevator doors opened with a "Ding!". He awoke from his stupor, startled. He was met with a familiar face. Suddenly, he felt arms wrap around him. He looked down to found Zhao Chun, her face pressed to his chest.

A wide smile spread over his face as he wrapped his own arms around her figure. Suddenly, Anthony heard the click of a camera. He lifted his face to find Ba Gao, a camera in his hands, and a wide grin plastered to his face. Carefully settling Zhao Chun into a nearby couch, Anthony pulled up his sleeves and started to chase after Ba Gao, arms outstretched.

"Give me that damned camera! Ba Gao! You sly wretch!"

They laughed heartily as they chased each other around the penthouse. Zhao Chun placed her hand over her mouth to suppress the fit of giggles that welled up from deep within.
