Chapter 3 - The Bride of Yuncheng & The Youth: Part I

Sitting in front of the copper mirror, the female garbed in red and gold wedding garments sighed as she stared at her reflection. At the tender age of 15, she already had to worry about the matters of marriage. As a member of the aristocratic society, she was destined to have her front door lined up with suitors at an early age. Coupled with her peerless beauty in the Prefecture, being touted the number one beauty, she was the desire of many young men. Therefore when the Mo Clan officially announced that she was going to be seeking a husband, Yuncheng was quickly filled past capacity.

With her head in her arms, Mo Qingcheng stared off into the copper mirror, caught up in her storm of thoughts. Fully engrossed, she quietly stared off into space before she was rudely interrupted by the door to her room opening. She was startled, jumping out of her seat. Finding that it was only her maidservant bringing in a pair of servant girls with her, she quickly sat back down, recomposing herself in a flurry. Blushing with embarrassment, she turned away from her servants before coughing and speaking up. Her voice, clear as a crystal brook, rang out in the dressing room.

"Why have you disturbed me?"

Tenderly, the maidservant slowly smiled before responding to Mo Qingcheng.

"In response to the Young Lady, this lowly one and her subordinates are here to help you prepare yourself before you go out in public."

Having said so, she bowed low, waiting for Mo Qingcheng's word of approval. Mo Qingcheng's calm demeanor broke as her discomfort flared up once more, disturbing her calm façade. Her distress was completely displayed as a flurry of thoughts raced through her mind. Staring blankly into space, twiddling her thumbs, softly biting her lips, she had completely lost herself, forgetting about her surroundings. Her woeful thoughts overwhelmed her and then everything became a whirl.

The sound of something hitting the wooden floor resounded out with a loud "thump". Lifting her head, the maidservant found her mistress on the floor, out like a light. Screaming in horror, she and her subordinates quickly carried her, gently placing her onto the bed. One of the subordinates were sent out to get the doctor. Slamming the door open and running as if her life depended on it, the maid returned a few minutes later, her face flushed and out of breath with the doctor close behind her.

Grasping his snow-white beard with a shocked expression, the Doctor briskly walked to the bedside of where Mo Qingcheng lay. The maids had scrambled out of the way and quickly composed themselves in orderly lines on the walls of the room at the Doctor's approach, their heads at a slight incline - in respect.

Saintly Doctor Li was a renowned Doctor of Yuncheng. There were countless acts of benevolence attributed to his name. Everyone knew of his name, from the lowliest beggar to the Lord of Yuncheng himself. All respected his benevolence, his only enemies were those that envied his prominence. His reputation was unstained despite his advanced years and decades of being a public figure. This was the only cause of stain on his character, he was a Saint on Earth, something that was too good to be true. There were many investigations launched into his background, but so far nothing had come up. He was spotless.

Placing his practitioner's case next to his cushioned seat, Li Wenliang proceeded to examine his patient. Deftly picking up Mo Qingcheng's arm, he felt her pulse. The corners of his eyes wrinkled in confusion. Having achieved no results from the initial examination, he decided to proceed a step further. Retrieving the case from the side, he released the latches. Inside were a variety of medical tools, such as a scalpel, a set of silver needles, glass bottles, powders, and pre-made tonics. Taking the scalpel and a small bowl in his hands, he made a small slit on Mo Qingcheng's hand, letting the thick blood pool into the porcelain bowl, before quickly bandaging it back up. Pulling out a package of white powder, he poured it into the blood-filled bowl, causing it to turn the darkest shade of black one had ever seen - akin to looking into the abyss. Nodding to himself, he believed that he had discovered the illness and the proper way to treat it. As he had done many times in the past, he pulled out his needles, mortar and pestle, and a few bottles. Uncorking the bottles, he measured in the quantities by instinct, specific amounts of each were put into the mortar. With the liquids inside swirling about, he poured in some powders wrapped in high-quality bamboo paper with the quantities ranging from a pinch to a quarter of the small package. Picking up the pestle, he skillfully ground the mixture into the paste in under a minute. He then dipped the needles into the paste before inserting it into Mo Qingcheng's acupoints.

All of this happened under the sparkling eyes of the maids and personal maidservant. For the maids, it was their first time seeing the Saintly Doctor in action and they were thoroughly astonished, but even though the maidservant had seen a similar scene once before, Saintly Doctor Li's skill and efficiency never failed to astonish her. They held their breath throughout the entire scene, careful as to not disturb the Saintly Doctor's concentration.

Examining his patient once more, Doctor Li let out a sigh of relief. A layer of sweat had formed on his forehead from the intense concentration, his ragged breaths filled the quiet room. Nodding to the maids that he was done, they too let out a sigh of relief. The maidservant then approached the Saintly Doctor with an expression of slight unease. Despite knowing the Saintly Doctor was done with his treatment, she knew that there were strange illnesses out there that even the Doctor could only ease. So, she decided to forgo her nervousness and asked the Saintly Doctor.

"Doctor Li… will my mistress be… alright?"

Her worried and wavering tone carried across the small room. Although it only took a second for the Saintly Doctor to answer, it felt like years for the maidservant.

"She will be alright, I have suppressed the illness. What your mistress suffers from is a rare illness of which even I have only heard of from my Master and never seen before. For this illness, there is only one treatment available which can only be obtained from a fortuitous encounter. At the time, my Master could only watch as his patient died, suppressing it for as long as possible."

The maidservant's face noticeably paled by a few shades, nodding at the gravity of the situation.

"Then… I shall lead Doctor Li to a room to rest. I believe City Lord Mo would like an audience with you after you have recovered."

Having said so, the maidservant led Saintly Doctor Li out of the room, carefully closing the door behind her as to not disturb her mistress' rest.
