The inspiration for the ceaseless attacks by the great gods was from AI War and AI War II, where you would have to defend your territory — while conquering strategic areas — from never-ending attacks. Overtime, the enemy's fleet composition would shift to counter yours, if you had been favouring a particular ship type too much, as well as increasing in number every so often.
