Chapter 60 - Battle with the Fourth-Order Zombie

Chapter 60: Battle with the Tier-4 Zombie

"What more do you want!?" Zhao Kun glared at Zhou Xiong, eyes locked on him.

"Since they've all joined my team, why don't you three come along too?" Zhou Xiong said with a smile.

"In your dreams!" Zhao Kun spat.

"Then don't blame me. In the apocalypse, I'm not about to leave loose ends."

"Kill them."

The moment the words left his mouth, dozens of people closed in around Zhao Kun and his two remaining men.

But just as both sides were about to clash, the floor began to tremble.

Everyone froze. Heads snapped toward the distance.

Not far ahead, a massive horde of zombies was stampeding straight toward them.

Every face went pale. No one cared about killing anymore. They scrambled into the supermarket and hauled the rolling shutter door down behind them.

"Move! Drag the shelves over-block the door!" Zhou Xiong barked.

People rushed to comply. Row after row of shelves scraped across the floor and stacked up behind the entrance, sealing it tight.

Seconds later, the horde slammed into the supermarket's front. Fists and bodies crashed against the rolling shutter door in a frenzy.

The door shook with every impact. Everyone's hearts climbed into their throats.

"How can there be this many?" Zhou Xiong's face was grim.

"Who the hell knows-there's gotta be over a thousand out there. This is insane."

Outside, the horde battered the door for a long time without breaking through. Then the Tier-4 Zombie let out a single roar.

Four Tier-3 Zombies lumbered forward and slammed into the door together.

BOOM.

The impact shook dust from the ceiling. Several shelves behind the door toppled in a chain reaction. Every face inside went white.

"Hold it! Get up there and hold it!" Zhou Xiong screamed.

People threw themselves against the barricade of shelves, bracing with everything they had.

BOOM. BOOM.

The four Tier-3 Zombies hammered the rolling shutter door again and again. The metal warped and buckled inward.

But with dozens of Tier-2 Evolvers pressing their weight against the barricade, the door held.

Then the Tier-4 Zombie walked up to the door.

It crouched down.

Its fingers curled under the bottom edge of the rolling shutter door.

And it lifted.

"Holy shit-!"

From their vantage point nearby, Yang Bin and the others stared wide-eyed.

"It knows how to open a rolling shutter door!?"

Zombies had only ever known how to smash through obstacles. They couldn't even figure out outward-swinging doors. But this Tier-4 Zombie understood how a rolling shutter worked-grab the bottom, pull up.

All three felt their scalps go numb.

How were people supposed to survive against something like that?

Inside the supermarket, no one had anticipated it either. The rolling shutter door rose before their eyes, and jaws dropped across the room.

"It's over!"

Despair swept through the crowd.

As the door lifted, zombies poured through the gap, smashing aside the shelves at the entrance like they were nothing.

"Pick up your weapons and fight!" Zhou Xiong roared.

He buried his axe into the skull of the first zombie through the door, splitting it wide open.

The others snapped out of their shock and grabbed whatever they could. Weapons swung. Zombies fell.

Between both groups, there were over a hundred people-all of them blooded survivors who'd killed their share of the dead. Desperate or not, they weren't going to lie down.

But with the rolling shutter door fully open, the flood of zombies was endless. Their defensive line crumbled fast.

The battle devolved into chaos inside the supermarket. The only saving grace was the limited space-the aisles and shelves created bottlenecks that kept the zombies from swarming all at once. The defenders could still hold. Barely.

From his position nearby, Yang Bin watched the scene unfold. His eyes lit up.

"Let's go. We hit them from behind."

He snatched up his barbell rod and charged. Chen Hao, Hu Wenliang, and one cat followed without hesitation.

The three reached the rear of the horde in seconds. Barbell rods swung in vicious arcs, caving in skulls and shattering spines. Zombies at the back dropped before they even knew what hit them.

Little Orange wove through the horde like a blur, claws raking through necks one after another.

Speed was Little Orange's edge-not raw power. Tier-1 and Tier-2 zombies went down easy. Tier-3 ones were a different story.

The zombies noticed them fast. The Tier-4 Zombie roared, and the rear ranks wheeled around to face the new threat.

The three didn't flinch. Barbell rods whipped through the air, dropping every zombie that came at them.

With the supermarket crowd drawing the main pressure, these stragglers were small fry. No problem at all.

But as the body count climbed, the Tier-4 Zombie finally caught on. These four were more dangerous than the entire mob trapped inside.

It roared again-louder, sharper.

Every zombie still outside the supermarket turned. Hundreds of them. All charging straight at Yang Bin's group.

"Oh, come on! Can't handle it!?"

Yang Bin cursed and immediately pulled back. If that's how you want to play, I'm not sticking around.

The horde gave chase. A conservative count put it at six or seven hundred.

"Brother Bin, what do we do?"

"The library. Lead them in, then we jump from the second floor." Yang Bin didn't slow down.

"Brother Bin, you're planning to-?"

"Heh. Our target was always the Tier-4."

"Got it!"

The three sprinted into the library. The horde flooded in after them.

The building was massive. They weaved through the stacks, toppling row after row of bookshelves behind them. Every heavy shelf that crashed down pinned a few more zombies beneath it.

Then they bolted up to the second floor and threw themselves out the windows without a second thought.

Yang Bin hit the ground, rolled, and immediately ran to the library's main entrance. He slammed the doors shut.

"Move!"

They sprinted back the way they'd come.

Minutes later, they were at the supermarket again.

Outside the building, fewer than a hundred zombies remained. The rest were either trapped in the library or still fighting inside the supermarket.

"Go! The Tier-4 is mine. You two hold off the rest!"

"On it!"

Three people and one cat charged without hesitation.

The Tier-4 Zombie saw them coming back. Something like confusion flickered in its dead eyes.

Where did all my subordinates go?

Yang Bin didn't give it time to wonder. He closed the distance and swung the barbell rod straight down at its skull.

"ROAR!"

The Tier-4 Zombie snarled and slapped its palm out. The barbell rod deflected sideways with a clang-and the zombie lunged.

Yang Bin's eyes widened. It parried him.

But he'd fought too many battles to freeze up now. Startled, not panicked. As the zombie's body hurtled toward him, he drove a savage kick into its gut.

BOOM.

Over a ton of force launched the zombie backward through the air.

It hit the ground, rolled once, and was back on its feet instantly. It roared-and the nearby zombies abandoned Chen Hao and Hu Wenliang entirely, pivoting to rush Yang Bin.

"Are you kidding me!? Lacking Martial Virtue!"

Yang Bin swept his rod in a wide arc and smashed through the first wave of charging zombies.

But that was exactly what the Tier-4 Zombie wanted.

The instant Yang Bin's swing finished-momentum spent, rod still extended-the Tier-4 Zombie launched itself at him from behind the fodder.

Yang Bin's eyes narrowed. His force was committed. No time to bring the rod back around. He threw himself sideways.

He dodged the lunge. Mostly.

Claws raked across his shoulder, tearing flesh down to the muscle. Blood sprayed.

"Sneaky bastard-!"

"Get the other zombies off me! Now!"

Yang Bin shouted at Chen Hao and Hu Wenliang, then turned back to face the Tier-4 Zombie. His expression was hard.

This thing was on a completely different level from Tier-3.
