Chapter 6 - Winter Break (1)

That morning, Midori was talking to Sorah upstairs only because Sorah went up to the second floor to do to her homework. Normally, Midori would be alone because she was downstairs with her friends. It had been a while since the last time the two talked to each other.

“Tomorrow, we don’t have to be at school at eight. I’m so glad,” Sorah said enthusiastically while grinning so bright.

Midori looked surprised then she said, “Oh, I have Math first period so…”

“Oh…”

“On Wednesday though, I will have to wait for an hour or more for my second test.”

“Why—” she stopped and gasped, “Don’t tell me you have lunch in the middle?”

“Yeah, I have lunch in the middle.” Midori said, “I guess I’ll go to the library and wait there for an hour.”

“Ahh.”

-----

In Gym, they had to run four laps around the football field today. Midori was tired when she went to Orchestra.

Setting out her things and when to her seat, waiting for class to start. When class started, there was no playing or rehearsal but just Mr. Calish’s talking. Five minutes, then ten, fifteen and twenty...still not done talking.

Midori at this point was beginning to drop her head and dozing off slightly. Five more minutes and he was still talking, her bow dropped to the ground and she snapped awake to pick it up. Moments later, they were still not playing, then she completely let herself go and dozed off. Only waking up fifteen minutes left of class when they actually were starting to rehearse.

What did he talk about? ...Eh, probably it’s not important, I can always ask another person. But why did he talk so much today that I even fell asleep?

When she went to check the Model UN club, the teacher wasn’t in the room.

Where did he go? ...I guess I’ll not going to ask today.

The next three days were for students to take their mid-term. On Wednesday, after Midori finished her first test, she went to the cafeteria to eat her lunch. Then, without the need to get her coat, she left the school—and her backpack at the school—to walk to the library— it was allowed to freely leave and enter the school for those three days.

The weather wasn’t freezing cold but wasn’t particularly warm, it was windy, very. While walking, there were earbuds in her ears. Her way of walking was on beat and rhythm with the music that was being played.

The wind was slamming into her. Even though she didn’t mind the cold, the wind made the temperature lower than the air itself, so, she shivered slightly on her way to the library.

When she arrived at the library, she asked for a private quiet room. For the next hour, Midori was reading in her room with the music playing out loud without the earbuds. Half of the time, she was indulging herself with entertainments.

The way back to the school was similar to when she went there, her backpack wasn’t stolen nor sent to the office. The next test was… gym.

Changing her thin sweater to the gym shirt and put on the rigid heart monitor around her ribs that were closest to the heart. They were to run for 13 minutes straight without having the colour on the heart beating(and time of hard pumping) tracking screen be lower than green, which was blue and grey.

She was using a strategy to lessen the running amount in that 13 minutes by getting the colour to orange and then walk. When the colour drop to green, she would start running again, lest it came down to blue and the time won’t increase. That was what she did the whole time of the running part to not completely exhaust herself.

When her time reached 13 minutes, she ceased her running and walked sluggishly to a wall. On her way to the wall, there were grey and white spots popping into her vision, blocking her sight slightly. Her head felt light but then it returned to normal when her hand touched. Her eyes were showing fatigue, however, it also shone a light of caution that didn’t appear every day.

A short period of time passed and she was called to do as much push-up as possible in one minute. She was able to push herself to do 11 acceptable push-ups. For the rest of the period, Midori did nothing and just sat on the bench.

There were just a few more weeks until the first semester ends, she was looking forward to the second gym class she would be having next semester. The description of that class said Zumba, dance, and yoga; she liked dancing.

Winter break will start in 3 days, what to do then? Reading? The whole break? Ha! There’s no way I can be that persistent.

She really didn’t do much in that break. Most of her time was spent in sleeping, sleeping at midnight and wake up only slightly early than noon. Sometimes, she would wake up and stay in bed for another hour, either snoozing, reading online stories, or watching videos.

She did try to practice playing her violin and managed to do so for just so many days. She then watched some movie. One was disturbing, slightly crept her out since she watched it alone, but she didn’t dislike it.

Jiggly Japanese Cheesecake…

Upon one day, she watched a video on Japanese desserts and came across the Jiggle Cheesecake. It looked so fluffy and soft, spongy and delicious. Hence, she decided to make it.

Succeeded in putting on some proper clothing to go outside, she went to the market. The only thing she needed was cream cheese, everything else was available at home.

Haha… that’s right. Just one thing, in the check-out line…

“$2.59,” said the cashier.

Midori smiled and paid for the cream cheese sized of a female teenager’s palm.

Exited the market, the cool air wafted around her nose. It was refreshing instead of drying up one’s throat, at least that was what she thought. Her mother recently complained about the weather being too cold that it made her quivered every time she was outside.
