Chapter 11 - Autobiography

The next thing she saw was a wheelchair being pushed toward her.

Ms. Gayz commented, “This is how it’s going to be until the year ends, you got to bring some kind of snack to eat.”

She lowered her head before trying to plead the nurse again, which was to no avail.

“But honey,” she started. “The school is responsible for whatever that happened to you here. We don’t want anything to be wrong with you so please, we will have to take you to the nurse office and send you home, dear.”

“...”

At least they didn’t call the ambulance.

Midori nodded and was helped by the nurse onto the wheelchair, which was unnecessary. The gym teacher opened the gym door and the nurse pushed the wheelchair through the gym and out to the cafeteria. It was uncomfortable for her.

She obviously was not paralyzed nor was unconscious, she was wide awake and didn’t feel sick and here she was, in a wheelchair. There were many people and it only worsened her mood as she pretended to be sick and let her hair fell to the side as she bowed her head, trying to hide her face.

When they arrived at the nurse office, she was put onto a bed with her legs lifted onto a box, apparently for the blood to go back to her brain. With the curtain covering, she only heard the nurse was calling her parents and no one picked up, which was because her parents didn’t answer unknown numbers, even if they did, they wouldn’t understand what the nurse was talking about because they didn’t speak English. Hence, she tried to call Midori’s sister, probably hoping that the sister would pick up.

The nurse sounded a bit restless, “No one is picking up.”

Meanwhile, after she figured the nurse was trying to call her family, Midori texted her sister about her condition. She was hoping that her sister could get the nurse to let her stay but Nanaka’s reply destroyed her hope of staying.

Nanaka: [You’re lucky I’m on my break right now and it’s long]

Midori: [Ehehe. They switched the schedule, so instead of lunch before gym, it’s gym before lunch. That’s why I became like this…]

Nanaka: [Bring snacks with you then]

“...”

Midori: [...I should]

The nurse went to her and she swiftly hid her phone.

“Dear, do any of your parents speak English?”

“No, they don’t speak English.”

“What do they speak?” She asked, “Chinese?”

“...” A bit annoyed but Midori disguised the annoyance in her eyes by shaking her head. “No, they speak Japanese.”

“Okay.” She stood up and went to the other side of the curtain again.

...Why don’t they just ask “What language do your parents speak?” instead of asking if they speak Chinese. Surely there are a lot of Chinese here but it’s not like every Asian is Chinese. Besides, asking what language we speak sounds better than assuming we speak Chinese.

She knew her dislike of being assumed as a Chinese was biased due to her father’s extreme hatred towards the Chinese government, but she couldn’t help but feel slightly offended. Thinking about China, she now thought that her so-called interest in dragging China down was a bit...No, it was plain out silly and hilarious. If anything, China wouldn’t become like Taiwan within a century, it was just not possible.

There are better goals for me to try to achieve, like becoming fit, rich and then invest in researches for anti-ageing, cancer and disease cures, and life-extension. When I can live longer than a century and more, that’s when I can freely try to do even longer long-term goals without worrying that I may die the next day. Also, wisdom comes from experience too and not just studies, and it just so happened that experience takes time. Wise and smart are definitely better than just smart.

It was another silly statement of her, such goals were seemingly impossible. However, there were people doing it other than her. Sure her explanation as to why she didn’t want to die anymore and to live for millennia might be ridiculous but that didn’t mean she couldn’t strive for it.

If she died because of not wanting to suffer, she also wouldn’t be able to experience the happy moments or those times when she felt pleasure or satisfaction ever again. Those feelings weren’t bad, if she was alive, she could enjoy herself, once dead, there was nothing to talk about.

The nurse sent a message to call someone who spoke Japanese within the school to come to the nurse office and act as a translator. The nurse called her parents again but they didn’t pick up so she let the Japanese guy left a message after the “beep” sounded.

Hearing the guy’s voice, she was suspecting that the guy was someone she knew. Indeed, when the guy left the message, the way he addressed her parent and her confirmed her suspicion, it was the son of her uncle’s wife’s sister-in-law’s brother. Supposedly, he was a relative that was connected through marriages but she had no idea how she should address their relationship, cousins didn’t sound right, cousin’s cousin’s cousin was worse because it was even more confusing. Basically, they were acquaintances that had no blood relation but still met at family gatherings.

After Nanaka said she was coming for her, the nurse asked her if there was anything else she needed before going home. Her backpack was brought along but she didn’t change her shoes yet and she would not let her boots stayed in the locker room only to be stolen. Hence they went back to the gym locker through the cafeteria again and to her locker in the hall after she washed her face in the locker’s restroom. She held the math book outside with her lunch box and phone, looking very unstable because she didn’t want to mess the book up. She was very careful with how her books look and the math book was heavy so it stayed in the locker almost all the time, secured that it wouldn’t have the slightest flaw.

-----

Immediately after unlocking the door, Nanaka went back in her car and drove away, leaving Midori alone. Instead of feeling sad, a smile blossomed on her face.

I guess I got a relaxed afternoon before having to run tomorrow to catch up.

She stared at her lunch box and, well, ate her lunch that was supposed to be eaten in school. Afterwards, she started wasting away her time with a few manga and Chinese online web novels on her phone along with anime playing on the TV.

She knew that it was only short-term happiness and satisfaction but she still continued. She was reading, not playing games, and manga and anime helped with her writing. Since there was another website that actually wouldn’t require a strenuous contract like the old one in paying the author, she decided to write again even if she didn’t meet the requirements. Besides, she knew who created the web because she was a part of that site’s server in the texting app and could talk to the staffs.

She had a plan: she would publish a story that would be an autobiography to secure her place on the web as one of the earliest authors, at the same time, try to complete the real one before publicizing it.

First of all, it wouldn’t disappoint readers if she was to drop it(the real one) and there wouldn’t be deadlines rushing after her, so no panic monster. Second, since it was an autobiography, she thought she could just end it by saying “the character woke up from a dream.” Besides, she doubted that many would like or even read the autobiography so maybe, just maybe, it wouldn’t be a big deal if she dropped it in the future; the story didn’t make her a single cent.
