Chapter 4 - A Man, the Cows, and the Deer - [C04]

In the wilderness, hundreds of meters from the now abandoned farm.

"MUUU!" The noises of angry cows resounded everywhere. Accompanying those noises were the sounds of the bells, echoing continuously from the cows’ neck. Lastly, the noise of heavy footsteps and fatigue came from a man running in front of the cows.

After running desperately for a minute Shu Himo started to feel signs of fatigue. He was, after all, someone who rarely walked out of his house, so his body was untrained.

"What's wrong with them? It's not like I killed any of them…" Shu Himo felt wronged. “System, I thought I would be reincarnated after completing the quest? Why is this happening?!”

[The User has obtained the right to choose in which world to reborn, not when.]

“This is a scam!”

[The system is fair and just. The word ‘scam’ can’t be used when referring to the system.]

“You’re a liar too! Oh- sh*t! They almost caught up with me! How should I escape from them…”

Looking around to find something Shu Himo finally saw a ray of hope. While around him there was nothing but fields, in less than forty meters he could see the entrance of a forest where he could use trees to hinder the cows.

He knew that, while the cows can run faster than humans when running straight, the human body allows changing direction more easily. It was by running zigzag that he was able to resist until now, but such a method was also draining his energy quickly.

When he was just a few meters from the forest Shu Himo felt something hitting his back. He realized immediately: the cows had caught up to him! He had to find a solution or his only fate was to get killed by them.

Not having another choice he thought back at the knowledge he obtained from reading novels and let his instincts take over. He turned around suddenly and unleashed his strongest kick toward the cow, a kick comparable only to someone who never made any sport.

His kick struck the face of the cow, but it failed to deal any damage.

However, Shu Himo’s expression was neither in despair or disappointment, he had instead a wide smirk revealing his stubbornness. Instead of using the kick to hurt the cow he had planned from the start to use the cow as a springboard!

The cow, seeing its target stopping for a moment tried to headbutt him, but it only served Shu Himo by giving him more thrust! Powerless to stop him, the cow could only watch as Shu Himo used it to jump away into the forest, almost crashing on a tree.

Feeling some twigs lightly scratching his arm Shu Himo broke into a cold sweat. Luckily his speed was not slowed by the twigs and he ultimately fell on top of a huge rock. He stood still on the rock, feeling his own heart beating crazily.

After calming down Shu Himo’s gaze wandered around to make sure it was safe. It was only when he noticed he was on a two meters tall rock that he sighed in relief.

He tried to stand up, but he felt a sudden pain in his right leg. Well, it was expected to happen after what I just did... how did I even jump so high?

Once he made sure that his leg wasn’t broken, he stood up and looked toward the cows. “Haha! You wanted to kill me but it seems you can’t come up here, can you?”

The cows had scared him to death, so how could he not make fun of them in exchange? Feeling satisfied with what he said he then looked around.

Nearby the huge rock there were only some trees, with a height up to three times the rock's. He was initially puzzled by their small size but considering that they were in the forest's outskirt, he thought it made more sense.

Feeling safe from the attack of the cows he sat to rest for a bit… but then he looked at the cows only to get astonished.

“CowStairs!” He let out a scream, shocked by the formation the cows just made. Dividing themselves into two roles—one who lied on the floor and one who climbed on top of the others—the group of cows created a stair, all just to reach the top of the rock!

As he was too focused on looking around he didn’t notice them on time, so they had almost climbed on top of the rock. Only three minutes had passed from the start, and the cows would need less than thirty seconds to reach the top of the rock.

“From when are cows so smart?!” Shu Himo was dumbfounded. “Was I too good of a teacher?”

During the night he had to wait several hours for the butcher, so Shu Himo had decided to teach the cows some 'basic knowledge' to pass some time... but he never expected it would backfire like this!

He shuddered for a moment, startled by their behavior. But he recovered quickly to think of a plan to escape. His eyes darted to the trees nearby, where he noticed one thick branch about a meter and a half away from him.

He hesitated to jump, but the sound of footsteps behind him made him pale. He reflexively jumped toward the branch, and at the same time felt the air moving behind his back—a cow had almost grabbed him.

Hugging the branch of the tree with all his strength, he was about to sigh in relief when every hair of his body stood straight. Trusting his instincts, he loosened his grip on the branch and fell toward the ground, where bushes muffled the impact.

At the same moment that he fell on the ground a sound resembling something crashing on the tree echoed, as the tree where Shu Himo stood a moment before trembled.

Looking up, Shu Himo widened his eyes in shock as he gazed a cow who had stuck its head in the tree, with her legs holding on the branches. If it wasn't for the nearby branches withstanding its weight the cow may have broken its neck.

“Are these cows insane?” Shu Himo felt a shiver down his spine. If he didn’t jump off the tree the impact of the cow’s head on his body would’ve crushed his bones.

He shook his head to dismiss the thought and ran into the forest, abusing the moment where all the cows were still immobilized by their ‘stair plan’.

After two additional minutes of running, he met an existence which left him terrified. If the cows were demons he was in front of the demon king: a bear!

Upon sight of the three meters tall monster blocking his way, Shu Himo froze. Surrounded by the cows behind and the bear in front, he felt the situation to be hopeless.

He clenched his teeth and decided to check again the surroundings in search of a solution. It was at that moment that he noticed a beehive on top of a tree close to the bear.

That’s it! He grabbed a small stone, intending to take down the beehive. Assuming a stance as if he were to throw a javelin, he sent the small stone flying at high speed toward the beehive.

He had calculated the trajectory, velocity, and the wind before he threw the stone.

When the stone left his hand, time seemed to slow down exponentially, and he could see his own sweat drop down from his forehead. After what felt like an eternity the stone was almost at its destination when it suddenly curved direction… and missed the beehive.

Fuck!

Feeling the threat of the cows approaching, Shu Himo grabbed impatiently three small stones from the ground and threw them toward the beehive... only to miss once again. It was only at the fifth stone that he managed to hit the beehive, shattering it.

Hearing the noise from the stones the bear turned quickly to Shu Himo and started rushing toward him… but little did it expect that a viscous thing would suddenly fall on its head, darkening its vision.

"Roar?"

The unlucky bear, having to resist against the enraged bees, could only stare grudgingly at Shu Himo who was making his victory pose.

Gifted with such a chance, Shu Himo did not hesitate and began to run away from the cows who had almost caught up to him. The terrain was filled with rocks and trees, so he maneuvered directly toward the worst terrain, using his ‘agility’ to get farther from the cows.

After an additional three minutes running, Shu Himo’s breath was heavy, as he noticed a bright light in front of him. He immediately panicked, “Why does the forest end here? What kind of forest is this small?”

The only reason he was able to escape from the cows was the harsh terrain he could abuse to his advantage… but in an open field he would have no way to resist!

Looking back to see how far the cows were, he first noticed that he still had around thirty meters of advantage, but he then also noticed a deer on the side looking at him in mockery.

Annoyed by the deer, Shu Himo made a ninety degrees turn all of a sudden, shocking both the cows and the deer.

Running in that direction would increase his chance of being caught by the cows, but that was not the reason the deer was shocked… in fact, the deer was shocked because Shu Himo was running toward it with an enraged expression!

The deer felt threatened and turned around to escape, only to find itself hit by a stone! Looking back in shock, the deer noticed that the human was fully armed with many small stones he collected from the ground.

The deer was in disbelief. What is wrong with this human?

Half curious and half startled by Shu Himo's behavior, the deer did not leave and only retreated slowly, intending to stare at the human which piqued its interest.

Meanwhile, Shu Himo barely managed to avoid the cows, saving himself from being eaten alive.

This created an extremely bizarre scene: a deer chased by a human who was chased by tens of cows! When the divinities checked the registration from the system they were all dumbfounded!

Such situation continued for the remaining minutes until Shu Himo heard a *Ding*.
