Chapter 48 - CHAPTER 48: ANCHORS IN THE SHADOW LIGHT

The expectation of a cold, tactical war room dissolved in a single heartbeat.

Behind the heavy, iron reinforced doors of the inner sanctum, the central hall of the monolith had been transformed into a jaw dropping visual spectacle that completely overwhelmed the senses. King Solon had not been hiding from the crisis; he had been preparing their final, grand send off before the long countdown of the training would begin. The white gold radiance of the king shimmered and pulsed, reflecting off massive oak tables that literally groaned under the absolute weight of the opulence.

Platter after platter of roasted wild boar lined the tables, their thick crusts sizzling and glistening with a rich honey glaze that carried the intoxicating scent of thyme, woodsmoke, and wild adventure. Heavy crystal decanters were filled to the brim with enchanted wine that shifted colors violently from a deep ruby red to a burning sunset orange in the light, while wicker baskets of freshly baked bread sent thick columns of steam curling toward the high copper rafters. The aroma of exotic spices from the furthest reaches of the Atlas cut through the room, mingling with the familiar, heavy scent of ash drifting from Juro’s pipe, who was already sitting at the far end of the hall with a dry, knowing grin.

In the midst of this festive roar, while Apollo resonated a deep, thumping rhythm in the background that caused the very hearts of every citizen to beat in perfect, thundering synchrony, King Solon leaped onto the center table. The impact rattled the plates as he hoisted a massive chalice that glowed like a trapped star, casting wild beams of light across the room.

“Listen, monsters of Ward!” he thundered, his voice echoing off the metallic walls like a battle cry. “The path is drawn! The Atlas has awakened! But a journey without a name is a journey without a purpose! You cannot conquer the unknown as nobodies!”

With a ringing laugh that shook the rafters, he pointed a glowing finger toward the youngest of the group. “You, little warrior! Ren o Lent, you go forth to show the beasts of this world who their master truly is!” Ren proudly brushed his Iron Straw Anting, sparks of static snapping from the metal, while Luna watched him with eyes full of absolute admiration.

Then Solon spun around, his eyes locking onto the girl who had just drifted back from dreamland. “And you, Miki of Oakhaven, survivor of the ash, you go forth to rebuild the future from the ground up!”

The cheering within the stone walls was absolute chaos, a deafening roar of voices and stomping feet, but then the King suddenly fell dead silent. The broad smile on his face froze instantly, and his gaze swept over the remaining five travelers: Silarias, Nyx, Apollo, Jane, and Aurelius. He slowly lowered his chalice, and his eyes became dead serious, almost stern as a heavy gravity settled over the hall.

“Wait just a single moment…” Solon muttered, his boots clicking loudly as he paced between them across the heavy oak table, looking down at them. “Ren has his clan, Miki has her heritage… but the rest of you? Look at yourselves. You stand here as shadows without roots. A first name is a call across a room, but a last name is an anchor tied to the earth.”

He stepped right to the edge, looming directly in front of Silarias. “In the outside world, at the University of the 9 Spheres, you are absolutely nothing without that second half. You are ghosts in the system. How are the messenger pigeons supposed to find you in a sky full of wings? How are the history books supposed to record your names as you rewrite the foundations of the world?”

He turned his piercing gaze toward Nyx, then at the completely indifferent Apollo. “A surname is the only language the administration of the kingdoms understands to recognize you as true citizens instead of dangerous drifters. It is your figurehead. It is your brand. As soon as you can write, as soon as your boots hit the dirt of the first outpost, you must be able to slam those names onto paper. It is the only tether you will have left to this bastion when the walls of Ward vanish forever behind the horizon.”

Solon leaned far forward, his aura flaring so brightly it cast long, sharp shadows behind them, his voice dropping to a commanding whisper that cut cleanly through Apollo’s thumping music. “So tell me right now… when the world stands at the gate and demands to know who dares to enter, what legacy do you carry with you? What is the last name that will grace your letters and make your enemies tremble?”

Apollo stepped forward first, his baggy clothes fluttering wildly as if caught in an invisible updraft of white gold light. “Names,” he muttered, cracking a piece of gum loudly between his teeth with a casual smirk. “I have had thousands of them in a hundred and ninety years, man. They come and go like the wind. But just call me Apollo Pythagoras. My father… let us just say he was a lightning bolt of a man who ruled from the highest mountain with an iron fist. He loved absolute order, but me? I love the raw measure of the music.”

He said it completely nonchalant, but the moment the name left his lips, the air around him grew so instantly, violently hot that the sand on the stone floor hissed and turned to solid glass under his boots. A sharp scent of ozone filled the room. He did not speak the true name of his father, but the staggering, divine resonance shook the bones of everyone present.

Before the ringing silence could even settle, Jane stormed forward, her boots cracking against the floor. Her voice sliced through the hall like a razor-sharp blade. “BENZAO!” she screamed at the top of her lungs.

The reaction was instantaneous. Her mother, the towering tribal chief Tygra Benzao, slammed her fists onto the table, stood up, and bellowed back in perfect unison, her voice joining with two entire armies standing behind her: “BENZAO!”

Poor Benzao, who was just standing there quietly watching the spectacle, was physically blasted backward a step by that colossal wall of sheer love and raw recognition. He began to stammer wildly, his face turning as violently red as an overripe tomato, completely stripped of his breath. He could only manage a weak, trembling: “Oh, Tygra…” as he almost physically melted under the fierce, fiercely loving gaze of his towering wife. The armies didn’t stop, stamping their heavy spears against the earth in a rhythm that vibrated through the walls: “JANE BENZAO! JANE BENZAO!”

Then the focus shifted entirely, the room turning toward the next target. Aurelius coughed uncomfortably, scratching the back of his neck. “Erm… my last name is Kara.”

The King’s courtiers and advisors stiffened instantly, their faces turning pale. “KARA? Is that truly your name?” A violent shockwave of tense whispers rippled through the entire crowd like wildfire.

Aurelius broke the tension by laughing hilariously, waving his hands. “No, no, take it easy, people! Don’t pass out on me. I was told Kara stands for death. A bit dark and edgy, right?”

Solon looked down at him with a deadpan, bone-chilling sincerity that cut the laughter short. “Ehh… Kara is death, yes. But it is also time, boy. Death and time woven into one fabric. Your eyes…” The King let out a deep, heavy sigh that seemed to carry the weight of centuries. “Tell me where your mother is Queen.”

Aurelius closed his eyes, and as he began to speak, his voice carried a strange, resonant frequency. He described a place that sounded like a fever dream, a hyper advanced city of steel, blinding neon lights, floating trains, and glass towers that literally pierced the heavens. It was a vision of a future world where the ancient, rigid traditions of the Edo period blended seamlessly with hyper advanced technology, a living organism of neon, steel, and floating gardens.

“The cities are constructed in massive vertical tiers,” Aurelius murmured, his hands tracing the air as holographic light seemed to spark from his descriptions. “At the very bottom lies the ‘Low Grid’, where narrow alleys with glowing wooden lanterns and robotic food stalls spread the heavy scent of synthetic ramen. But floating directly above them are the ‘Sky Shrines’,ancient temples resting on massive magnetic fields, surrounded by cherry blossoms that bloom year round thanks to precision climate control systems.”

The crowd listened in absolute, breathless silence as he painted the picture. “The architecture utilizes ‘Living Wood’, a bio material that grows like a physical tree but possesses the tensile strength of reinforced carbon fiber. Massive holographic dragons swim through the skyscrapers, weaving between the spires. People wear kimonos made of digital fabric that shifts colors dynamically based on their mood or the exact phase of the moon. The old Shinkansen trains have evolved into ‘Maglev Dragons’, screaming through vacuum tubes at the speed of sound, while mechanical geishas serve tea in hidden teahouses overlooking an endless ocean of liquid light.”

Solon’s eyes grew incredibly misty, staring into the distance. “Yes… I remember now. A beautiful woman, but she had something terribly dark about her… I had forgotten.”

Suddenly, without any warning, the King completely broke. The stately, proud Solon began to sob loudly, wailing with an explosion of raw emotion. He lunged forward, grabbed Aurelius, and escalated the hype by hoisting him straight into the air like a small child, shaking him. “Son! Ah, your aura seemed so familiar to me! I knew it!” He set him down roughly, leaving Aurelius to wobble violently on his feet, completely dazed.

Nyx stood there in total, paralyzed disbelief, actual tears streaming down her pale cheeks. “Brother?” she whispered, the word escaping her lips like a prayer.

Aurelius let the word rest on his tongue, his eyes widening. “Brother… brother… brother…” A radiant, newfound light beamed from his face, and he clapped his hands together with a loud snap. “Little sister! I always wanted a little sister, and now it is you!”

Juro took a deep drag from his pipe and added dryly from the smoke: “Yeah, and on top of that, your father is the literal King of the Timekeepers, haha. Good luck with that family drama.”

Aurelius laughed like an absolute madman: “Hahaha!” and his brain completely short circuited from the shock. He promptly tipped over backward like a felled tree, falling straight into Jane’s incredibly strong, waiting arms.

The entire hall erupted into a chaotic storm of laughter and shouting, but Solon instantly shifted his blazing focus to the final duo standing in the center. Nyx, her face still wet with tears, suddenly stepped forward and shouted against absolutely everyone’s expectations, her voice cutting through the noise: “MAWU! MAWU!”

Silarias turned as violently red as a warning buoy, his eyes bulging. “NOOO! NO! LISA! That is the one, we are taking that as a last name! Don’t listen to her!”

Vespera, Juro, and even the fierce Tygra Benzao were doubled over, clutching their sides with laughter at the sheer panic on his face. Solon interrupted them, chuckling warmly: “Ho ho… little Nyx, dear heart. Two things. One: if you want those names so badly, why not combine them into Mawu Lisa? And two… you are clearly not family yet, so why on earth would you take the exact same last name right now?”

Nyx turned slowly and looked at Silarias with a heavy, unyielding gaze that literally made the entire world stand still. A dead, suffocating silence fell over the room as her shadow aura began to bleed onto the floor.

“We belong to each other,” she cried out, her voice vibrating with a terrifying intensity. “We are bound by something deeper than blood. I can only speak for myself… but I am never, ever letting him go. So why should I wait to take his name later when I already know right now, in this very room, that I am his soulmate?”

Silarias, trembling from head to toe with pure tension, pride, and an overwhelming surge of emotion, threw his head back and yelled: “YES! That is right! Tell them, my pearl of the night!”

But the sheer shockwave of that intense public declaration, combined with the sudden surge of his own boiling power ,something inherited from within, completely overwhelmed his system. His vision blurred, his legs turned to jelly, and he tipped over exactly like Aurelius, crashing straight into the waiting, open arms of Nyx who caught him without breaking her stare.

As the wild, echoing laughter of Juro, Apollo, and Beat filled the night (“Yep, that is our Sil! Classic!”), Jane carried the completely unconscious Aurelius off to bed, and Nyx effortlessly lifted her Silarias. King Solon began to clear the remains of the massive banquet with a proud smile, his eyes still shimmering with heavy tears. He reached out and firmly took the hands of Juro and Apollo.

“Hahaha… yes… I know what you are thinking: normally he is so cool and cold, right?” He squeezed their hands with a grip of pure steel. “But family is everything. Blood is thicker than friendship, remember that well.”

He embraced them both tightly, sobbing with pure happiness. “But you know… family is not just your relatives. A true family is being there for one another when the world completely stops turning. A true family is not the single tree from which you grew, but the entire forest that refuses to bend when the storm comes to break you.”

Nyx did not just carry Silarias; she activated her gravity manipulation, letting him drift weightlessly like a dark cloud as she carefully navigated the dark, metallic corridors of their sanctuary. The heavy bedroom door swung open with a soft, mechanical click, and the cool night air of the chamber welcomed them. Guli, the boar, lay half asleep in the corner, but his ears perked up and he opened one glowing eye as the two shadows glided past. Seeing Nyx holding the completely unconscious Silarias, the companion theatrically rolled his eyes and let out a deep, dramatic sigh, as if to say this ridiculous scene had become all too familiar.

Nyx looked down at her companion with a gaze shimmering with pure, childlike euphoria, her entire face lit up. “He is my world, Guli,” she whispered, a smitten, brilliant smile breaking across her face like a teenager sharing her deepest, most precious secret. “He is my everything, and I am never letting him go.”

With ultimate, flawless precision, she floated him toward his bed. She laid him down softly onto the sheets and pulled the heavy blanket up to his chin, tucking him in with a profound tenderness that stood in stark, beautiful contrast to the terrifying power of her aura.

She turned around to walk toward her own bed across the room, her heart still thumping like a war drum from the intense confession in the hall. But just as her foot touched the cold floor by her own bedside, a raspy, incredibly soft voice pierced the quiet dark.

“Ehh… Nyx?”

Nyx froze instantly in place, her posture rigid. Her eyes shot wide open and pure, unadulterated panic immediately took hold of her. She spun around on her heel, words tumbling over her lips in a chaotic, breathless rhythm. “Ehh, Sil! What I just said in the hall, I… I did not mean it to be so overwhelming, really! I just thought it was practical, you know? For the university administration, and the mail pigeons, and…”

Silarias interrupted her mid-sentence with a gentle, incredibly warm smile, his eyes tired but crystal clear in the darkness. “Thank you, Nyx. Thank you for saying exactly what I was thinking, but for which I could not find the words. I saw you standing there tonight, you were glowing so brightly… I could only sit back and enjoy your presence.”

The heavy confession hung in the quiet room, thick and suffocating. The raw, staggering emotional weight, combined with a sudden, violent spike of her own divine lunar energy reacting to his words, caused Nyx’s system to hit a complete and total overload. The cold, calculated intellect of the princess dissolved into nothing. Her knees completely gave out, and she went out like a light, her body falling limp right into the arms of the now sitting Silarias, who lunged forward to catch her. She could only mumble a few incoherent, fading words about “we… you… us together…” before falling into a deep blackout.

Silarias was startled beyond belief, holding her tight against his chest as her warmth radiated against him. “Geez, oh no! Nyx? Just let me put her to bed, and she will be fine.”

He lifted her up carefully, marveling at how light she felt, and laid her in her own bed, pulling the covers gently over her shoulders. As she lay there in her unconscious state, her moon-pale skin catching the silver starlight from the window, Nyx turned slightly, her lips pursed ever so softly in her sleep.

Silarias leaned over, his heart racing, intending to give her a completely innocent kiss on the forehead as a silent seal on the legendary night. But at that exact microsecond, she shifted her head.

His lips met hers in a full, sudden, and completely unexpected kiss.

Silarias’s eyes flew wide open in pure, electric shock. Nyx, even deep within her unconscious blackout, instinctively reacted to the physical touch of her soulmate. Her eyes flickered open for a fraction of a second, burning with ancient power, and her aura flashed in a blinding, catastrophic explosion of pure, radiant lunar light.

The sudden, violent surge of raw kinetic energy from her flashing aura, combined with the sheer psychic shockwave of the connection, sent Silarias flying backward through the air. He hit the mattress of his own bed with a heavy, echoing thud, the wind knocked out of him as his nose began to bleed profusely from the sudden, massive pressure spike of his own blood reacting to her divine light.

There they both lay across the room from each other, completely overwhelmed and knocked out by the titanic forces they had just set in motion, as the moon above Ward slowly faded away, giving ground to the first burning rays of the rising sun.
