The sky above Cinderpulse did not tear with a sound, but with a shudder that cut deep into the very bones of its inhabitants. It was as if the earth itself heaved a final, deathly sigh while the foundations of the city were ripped apart by invisible, unholy claws. An unnatural silence descended, a vacuum in which even the slightest sound perished, before the violence erupted with the rhythmic hammering of hearts skipping beats in pure mortal terror.
The Nobodies did not hesitate for a single second. Already existing on the extreme edge of human capability, they now shifted to a level that defied perception. They transformed into razor sharp phantoms of gold, deep blue, and liquid silver, slicing through the smoke and dust with a speed that seemed to slow time itself. Tools clattered unused onto the cobblestones as the group shot like a swarm of hungry birds of prey toward the gaping wound in the earth.
In the heart of the chaos stood the two generals, facing each other, their strides heavy with an authority that suddenly seemed fragile against this force of nature. Amidst the panic, they broke out into a sharp, almost feverish argument, their egos unyielding even at the edge of the abyss.
“Through my team, this miracle was wrought!” Gunpowder roared, balling a smoking fist toward the destruction, sparks flying from his knuckles like small firecrackers. “We harbor visitors who make the lightning itself turn pale! Your dancers would trip over their own shadows in a real fight!”
Pyronia threw her head back, her gaze a razor sharp sword of haughty rage. “Nonsense, barbarian! We possess the superior guests. Mine move with the grace of the wind, cutting through the dark while yours know only the scent of sweat, panic, and brute force! Look at them, they are a work of art!”
Their feud was torn apart by a sound that seemed to bubble up from the deepest reaches of the earth. An angry crowd surged around the yawning crack, weapons drawn, their throats raw from screaming, their faces twisted in absolute disgust and vengeance. “Where did Wacko Jacko go?! Where is he?! The degenerate ran this way! Don't let him crawl back into the dark!”
Out of the absolute darkness of the rift, two enormous, sinewy arms shot upward. The creature moved with unnaturally long limbs, fluid and grotesque, like a reflection from a distorted mirror. With a speed that made any reaction impossible, two bystanders were dragged into the black depths. Their death cries were smothered by a screech that sat somewhere between a dying bird and the guttural laugh of a demon.
The Chupacabra appeared. It was a distortion of life itself, a hybrid of shadow and eternal hunger. With a taunting slowness, the monster lifted a gigantic boulder above its deformed head; the muscles beneath its sallow skin rolled like thick snakes under a sheet. It made to hurl the stone with all crushing force toward the generals.
In a split second, the world froze for the Nobodies.
Nyx was the first to break the silence. She shot forward, her hair transformed into a flowing stream of glowing silver that fluttered behind her like a comet’s tail. She thrust out her hands, and the enormous boulder seemed to freeze in mid air; she stripped the object of its weight, her aura an icy mist that simply ignored the laws of gravity. Immediately following her was Silarias, who opened the attack with reckless abandon. Clad in a dark, awe inspiring form that seemed to swallow the surrounding light, he battered the rock with his lead heavy gauntlets. The stone exploded into a thousand dust particles that filled the air like suffocating ash.
In the haze of this debris, Ren flashed past using his S.A.W. technique, a movement that stretched time to a breaking point. On his back sat Miki, her small fists wreathed in fiercely roaring flames that scorched the surroundings. She unleashed a strike that reduced the remaining fragments to nothing and further broke the monster’s immense impact.
Directly behind them followed a blinding synergy of power. Jane, enveloped in her electrical form, merged with the pure ethereal power of Nicola and the scorching solar energy of Apollo. It was a triple lance of light that made the atmosphere crackle. Lyn and Cilla did not flinch; they leaped nose to nose atop the monstrosity and, with a perfectly synchronized movement, kicked the monster straight into the trap set by Balamore and Izamaru.
Izamaru performed a graceful and deadly dance in the middle of the sea of flames. With an impossible kick from the air, he pinned the creature down, while Balamore stood there motionless, gripping his ancient, heavy totem with white knuckles. His eyes began to glow like smoldering coals deep in a forgotten cave.
Yet the shockwave of this collision was too great. An enormous bang thundered through the line, sending Gunpowder and Pyronia flying with immense speed through the massive wall behind them. The wall collapsed with an ear splitting crash, burying them under the dust. At that exact moment, the tattoos on their arms vanished, like an ancient curse finally broken, and their eyes awakened in a bright, clear light.
Pyronia slowly came to, shaking her head as memories flowed inward like an all consuming waterfall. She felt like a resurrected woman finally waking from a decades long slumber. “Pyro… come on… I can’t hold this much longer…” she heard a voice crack laboriously through the dust.
She wiped the grit from her eyes, and the image finally sharpened. It was a sight that made her heart stop. General Gunpowder stood hunched over her, his veins bulging like thick ropes, his back dangerously arching under the weight of the massive collapsed wall. He was holding back tons of stone single handedly to protect her.
“Go…” he squeezed out through his teeth, blood running down his forehead and dripping onto the rubble. “I finally feel delivered. My mind is clear, Pyro. I don’t understand anything of what’s happening, except for one thing.”
“Pyro… do you still recognize me…” he began, his voice straining under the crushing weight, but she interrupted him with a look filled with a regained and profound wisdom.
“Together,” she whispered, her voice laden with a legendary and timeless sentiment. “For where the grace of the dance and the raw bang of the struggle meet, there the darkness always gives way to eternity. Hold on, old friend!”
Meanwhile, Balamore and Izamaru had pinned the Chupacabra, who had now taken the form of the notorious Wacko Jacko, to the ground. Suddenly, the street filled with a thick, suffocating mist, a smokescreen of biting sulfur spraying directly from the monster’s body. Through the mist, its skin began to tear and morph into its terrifying, enhanced hybrid form, muscles expanding and turning into obsidian scales.
“We are the Inquisition!” the monstrosity roared with a voice that seemed to come from a thousand different throats, vibrating with a disgusting, distorted frequency. “Superior to all known worlds! The weak will be purged! Bow before your end, you worthless worms!”
With brute force, he hurled Izamaru against the wall and leaped with insane speed toward Silarias. Dangerous spikes shot out of his back like black arrows, and one of them bored straight through the shoulder of the young Nobody, tearing through muscle and skin. Ren and Miki ran toward him in a state of pure panic, but the monster had no time to triumph; he was immediately struck away with enormous force toward Nyx.
Nyx now abandoned every form of human control. Her eyes turned completely white, and a pure mayhem of shadow and power erupted upon the beast. He was flung into the air like a ragdoll but tried to spring back into the fight with a sick and unnatural maneuver. In the split second he hung helpless in the air, he was intercepted from three sides at once.
To the right, Jane flashed by in a flurry of electrical madness. Directly beside her hung Aurelius, his photon blade fully activated, the glowing steel pressed with millimeter precision against the monster’s throat. Nicola and Apollo approached from the other side with a combination attack that seemed to suck the oxygen out of the air.
Just as the monster tried to strike them out of the sky with a final effort, Izamaru came flipping back from the rubble. With an impossible impact, he delivered a devastating heel drop, right into the distorted face of the creature, sending it flying back into the arena with a thundering crash.
Right at the feet of the now fully awakened Balamore.
The monster lay sprawled in the heavy dust at Balamore’s feet, its breathing a wet, ragged rasp. The atmosphere in Cinderpulse shifted instantly; the oppressive heat of the industrial district seemed to retreat, replaced by an ancient, icy presence that made the very air thicken. Balamore did not move a single muscle, but from deep within his throat escaped a haunting melody that sounded like the whistling of a bitter wind through forgotten ruins. It was a rhythmic, piercing whistle that began as a mere whisper but swelled until it made the marrow in the bones of everyone present resonate with a primal frequency. The earth itself began to pulse in time with the sound, and suddenly, from the cloudless, soot-stained sky, a massive iron boulder came crashing down with a thundering roar. The impact split the ground beside him, sending a shockwave that rattled the teeth of the survivors.
Balamore slammed his hands together with a slow, deliberate power, sparks of pure, concentrated energy spraying from his palms like dying stars, his totem glowing with a fierce, ancient light.
“Let’s dance.”
Wacko Jacko, or the nightmare that wore his face, roared in a blind fury. The Inquisition hybrid launched himself forward, hauling back for a blow that possessed the raw momentum to split a mountain in two. “Die, you baseline trash!” he screamed.
But his massive, scaly fist struck nothing but thin air. As Balamore’s eyes began to glow with a terrifying, incandescent light, he slammed the base of his totem into the cracked cobblestones and murmured words that forced reality itself to bend and buckle: “Xibalba’s Forest.”
In an instant, the air shimmered and hardened into a translucent emerald barrier. Out of nothingness manifested the massive, spectral figure of a turtle spirit, its shell an unbreakable rampart that absorbed the full force of the blow without yielding even a millimeter. The impact sent a visible ripple through the air, but the spirit stood firm. Before the hybrid could even register the failure, the shimmering form of a monkey king appeared from the shadows, howling with a deafening, primal roar. With a feral grin, the spirit scooped the monster up by its waist, swung it around like a useless rag, and slammed it against the cobblestones with such bone-shattering force that the pavement turned to powder.
The creature spat out another suffocating cloud of sulfur, its body beginning to crack and pop as it forced a transformation into an even more agile, lethal shape. Spikes retracted, and its limbs grew leaner, vibrating with unnatural speed. It realized it could not outmuscle Balamore’s spirits, so it pivoted. With a guttural shriek, it launched itself with a brutal, mid-air dropkick directly toward Apollo and the other Nobodies, who were still staggering from the previous shockwaves.
The attack was intercepted in a heartbeat. Silarias, despite the blood still seeping heavily from the jagged hole in his shoulder, threw himself into the monster’s path. His face was twisted in pain, but his eyes were pure fire. With a final, desperate surge of willpower, he swung his heavy gauntlet and swatted Jacko out of the air like a bothersome insect. The creature went sailing, its face scraping over the stone floor in a violent spray of sparks, blood, and pulverized rock.
Jacko scrambled back to his feet, his limbs twitching as he hissed unintelligible curses, his jaw hanging loose. “You think you can stop the Inquisition?! We are everywhere! We own the paths between worlds!” He began to gather every remaining ounce of his dark, necrotic energy, focusing it into a single, pitch-black sphere at the center of his chest for an all-destroying counterattack. He dug his claws into the earth, setting off a sprint so fast the ground beneath him simply disintegrated into dust. But then, an ear-splitting blast erupted, a sound so violent it made the entire city of Cinderpulse wail.
For a fraction of a second, two legendary shadows flashed past the Nobodies, moving with a singular, focused intent.
The sky filled with a masterpiece of violence, a choreography of destruction that no human could replicate. Pyronia and Gunpowder moved as a perfectly synchronized machine. Pyronia danced around the monster, her movements fluid and ethereal. “Witness the true art of Cinderpulse!” she cried out, her every step accompanied by graceful but deadly firework bursts that flayed Jacko’s skin open in flashes of emerald and brilliant gold.
Gunpowder was the hammer to her anvil, roaring with newfound liberation as he followed every opening she created. “Eat this, you freak!” he boomed, delivering brute, concussive explosions from his fists that made the atmosphere vibrate and left the monster without a single second to breathe or unleash his dark energy.
It was a symphony of grace and blast, a total sensory assault that left the Inquisition hybrid completely paralyzed. At the exact second the city clock struck the final beat of the deadline, and the first ceremonial rockets of the Day of the Dead pierced the heavens in vibrant bursts of purple and orange, the two generals merged for their finale.
With an explosive force that shattered the windows of every building for blocks, they struck Jacko simultaneously in the center of his misformed chest, crushing the dark energy sphere before it could detonate. The impact was astronomical. The monster was launched through the air like a rocket, roaring in absolute agony as he soared higher and higher until his silhouette dissolved into the blooming explosions of the festival fireworks. He became nothing more than a fading spark on the distant horizon, blown to pieces by the celebration. The silence that followed was heavy, filled only by the distant, joyous popping of the festivities in a city that was, against all odds, finally safe.
The dust of the cataclysmic struggle finally began to settle over the ruined square, coating the Nobodies like a layer of grey snow. They lay scattered among the rubble like broken marionettes, the adrenaline that had fueled their survival ebbing away to leave nothing but the raw, stinging reality of their wounds. Balamore propped himself up against a jagged, broken pillar, resting his heavy totem against his knee, while Izamaru sat nearby, his body trembling as he tried to force air into his lungs. The victory was theirs, but the price had been paid in blood and exhaustion.
As they began to bind their most urgent wounds with strips of torn clothing, Silarias stumbled around the corner of a collapsed building. He was leaning heavily on Nicola, his face a grim mask of soot, ash, and dried gore. He let out a pained, wet cough, clutching his chest, but his eyes still burned with a feverish intensity. Gunpowder and Pyronia approached them, their own uniforms reduced to scorched tatters, their expressions filled with a newfound, silent reverence. Before they could speak a word of gratitude, Silarias raised a trembling, healthy hand to silence them.
“Nicola… he came up with the plan,” Silarias wheezed between ragged breaths, a faint smile breaking through the grime on his face. “That you… that you two deserve to have a birthday.”
He swayed dangerously, his knees buckling, but Nicola held him fast while Nyx and Aurelius rushed forward to take the weight of their failing leader. Nicola offered a hoarse, painful laugh, ignoring the sharp sting in his side.
“Yeah… we thought of it nights ago,” Nicola added, his voice thin but proud. “We just didn’t know when the deadline would actually hit. But look.”
With a final, collective effort of the group, they pulled back a heavy, charred tarp to reveal two gargantuan cakes, each four tiers high and miraculously intact. They were smothered in rich, creamy swirls and intricate sugarwork, a vibrant, sweet defiance against the grim, grey ruins of the battlefield. Silarias gathered every flickering ember of energy left in his shattered body and shouted with a voice that cracked with raw emotion: “Happy birthday, kids! You actually earned this one!”
Miki and Ren stood frozen, their mouths agape and eyes wide with pure shock. They were young, and the whiplash of moving from total, visceral warfare to a moment of such tender, domestic happiness was almost too much to process. At that moment, Sister Ghoula appeared through the haze, carrying a massive spread of steaming, fragrant food that immediately began to drown out the acrid stench of sulfur and smoke. She moved with maternal grace, sliding a firm hand under Silarias’s back just as his strength began to evaporate.
“Sil, that’s not even the half of it,” she whispered with a soft, knowing smile.
Pyronia walked forward, Gunpowder at her side. The icy, predatory hardness of her features had completely dissolved; she looked at the battered group as if she were seeing her own family returned from the dead. She snapped her fingers, a sharp sound in the quiet air, and suddenly citizens and servants began to pour into the square from every alleyway. They carried banquets, pastries, and casks of cider, a river of abundance that stretched as far as the eye could see.
“This is the very least we can do for our saviors,” Pyronia said, her voice soft as she stopped in front of Nicola. Her eyes searched his face, full of respect. “And especially for a Von Eatherhart. Please, give your uncle my warmest, most personal regards, Nicola.”
The entire square went bone-chillingly silent. Every member of the Nobodies froze, their eyes slowly tracking over to Nicola, wide with utter disbelief. “Uncle?!” they shouted in a ragged, bewildered chorus.
Nicola’s face flushed a shade of red that put the festive fireworks to shame. He tried to puff out his chest and maintain some semblance of casual dignity, though his injuries made him lean slightly to the left. “Sir Galahad Von Eatherhart!” he blurted out, trying to sound noble.
Nyx and Jane stared at him, their jaws practically hitting the rubble. “Galahad is your uncle?! The legendary knight of the Eternal Order?!” Jane yelled, shaking her head. "Are you serious right now?!"
Silarias, watching the chaos from the safety of Sister Ghoula’s shoulder, suddenly doubled over in a fit of uncontrollable, raspy laughter. The laughter eventually smoothed out into a long, deep sigh of pure satisfaction. “Haha… of course he is! It couldn’t have been any other way with you, could it, Nicola?”
And with those final words, the leader’s body finally surrendered. The accumulated trauma of the battle, the searing pain of his pierced shoulder, and the massive emotional release proved too much for his nervous system. Silarias’s eyes rolled back as he slipped into a state of total, conscious collapse. He fell forward, a dead weight of exhaustion, but the Nobodies were there to catch him.
They stood together in the ruins, holding their leader amidst the booming sounds of the festival and the strange, silent falling of the first winter snow. The Day of the Dead had officially begun, but for the first time in their lives, it didn’t feel like an ending. It felt like a birth.
