The silence on the mountain pass was a lie, a razor thin membrane threatening to tear under the relentless, unbridled energy of Silarias. The choking ash of Steam City was now a distant stain on the horizon. At their feet, the Ward unrolled like a colossal, golden playground encompassing less than a quarter of the known atlas. They pulled to a halt, stepping out into an atmosphere that felt too still. The violet sky shimmered with raw potential. In the plunging depths, the glowing tendrils of the valley seemed to pulse in a synchronization of the sensation already screaming through Silarias’ veins.
Silarias was incapable of stillness. He was kinetic energy made flesh, a whirlwind of anticipation dancing along the sheer edge of the abyss with sensationally violent leaps. His new Battle Gauntlets did not merely crackle with electricity. They throbbed with a playful, brutal force that begged to reshape the world. He spun toward Nicola with a theatrical, sweeping gesture, his eyes glittering with an intensity that was nearly laughable, an overwhelming hype that instantly infected everyone around him.
“Nicola!” Silarias roared, a wide, feral grin splitting his face as he executed a series of lightning fast shadow boxing combinations against the thin mountain air, which cracked like a whip under his fists. “You stand there like a statue frozen in ice, staring at those stone turtles while the entire world is waking up beneath us! I am literally vibrating out of my skin with the hype, man! You are a walking mystery, a puzzle I have absolutely no patience for, but one I need to solve right now! Who are you, really?! Tell me! How do you fix that Ether shit in a world built on rust and misery?! I want to know, now!”
A rare, nearly imperceptible smile touched Nicola’s marble features. Silarias’ sensational temperament was infectious, even for a man of science accustomed to cold, hard logic. He waited until Silarias had executed a flawless backflip, landing with a heavy thud on the volcanic rock, before he raised his voice. When he spoke, it was low and resonant, like a deep cello echoing through the valley.
“I am a seeker in an era of collective amnesia,” Nicola said, opening his outer tunic with a deliberate, almost ceremonial movement. “My path crossed Lyn’s in the deepest, most godforsaken hollows of the EtherCorps, where we simply refused to sell our souls to a zipless, dead progress.”
In the hollow of his chest cavity, deeply embedded between his ribs and fused with his own organic tissue, a deep blue light pulsed. It was a spectacle of brutal beauty. The surrounding skin was rendered transparent, the veins and tendons glowing like the internal wiring of a divine machine.
“This is the Ether Anting,” Nicola declared, his voice ringing with the weight of a legend in the making. “It is my source, my curse, and my sanctuary. It converts my intellectual fire into tangible, brute power. While the rest of the world fights with steam and filth, this Anting drinks directly from the current of the Ether, the invisible ocean that binds the stars to the firmament. My mind is the lens; the Anting is the all consuming flame.”
Silarias stared, his mouth hanging open, at the luminous crater in Nicola’s chest. His own Anting, marked beneath his eye, was vibrating in pure, sympathetic resonance. The hype raging within his body didn’t subside into silence. Instead, it transformed into a deep, primal hunger for the power Nicola had just revealed.
Nicola was about to launch into a deep, technical exposition on the hierarchy of the EtherCorps, but he was abruptly cut off.
“Mister? Who is this? What is this?”
It was Ren and Miki. They stood with large, shining eyes before the floating form of Blitz, who was happily crackling with tiny blue sparks. The little spirit circled their heads like a curious, iridescent bird.
The tense, sensational atmosphere Silarias had engineered vanished instantly. Nicola’s marble expression softened in a way no one would have believed possible. He knelt down before the children, soothing them with a voice so soft and gentle it felt surreal after the chaos they had endured.
“Ssh, it’s all right,” Nicola spoke calmly, stroking their heads with a fatherly tenderness. “And please, do not call me Mister. Just call me Nicola. Better yet, from now on, consider me your new, crazy big brother.”
He looked up at the small, glowing orb of energy that was Blitz, which was now playfully bumping against Ren’s cheek.
“Blitz is not a what or a thing. He is a living being, just like you. He feels, he dreams, and he protects.”
The children remained breathless, captivated. Nicola settled himself down, and the rest of the group involuntarily drew closer to listen.
“Once upon a time ago,” Nicola began, his voice now taking on the tone of a master storyteller weaving a dark, magical fairy tale, “when the world was not yet buried under steam and iron, there were the Guardian Spirits. Mighty watchers born from the pure breath of nature itself. But when humans closed their hearts, the spirits vanished into a deep sleep. I have spent my entire life searching for a way to kiss that ancient magic awake again.”
He pointed to the glowing crater in his own chest, where the Ether Anting pulsed like a captured star.
“I did not build Blitz from scrap metal. I forged him from the memories of the world. I captured the purest Ether in a crystalline vessel and gave him the power of lightning. He is a fragment of a legend that refused to die.”
The silence that followed was sacred. The origin of Blitz no longer felt like science. It felt like the birth of something divine.
Lyn broke the spell with a gaze full of creative passion. She looked at Nicola’s tenderness and Silarias’ brute hype, and she knew this was the moment.
“Listen to me!” Her voice shot across the mountain ridge like a lightning strike, vibrating with a sensational ecstasy that calmed the wind. “Normally, Nicola is the architect of our survival, the one who maps out the lines with the cold, sterile calculations of his mind. But today, logic dies! Today, we rip this plan from the seething soul of everyone standing here!”
Ren and Miki look at each other, confused, their brows furrowed at the complex words of the architect. Nicola, seeing the confusion in their young eyes, leaned over and whispered to them, placing a reassuring hand on their shoulders.
“She means,” Nicola soothed with a gentle smile, “that today we are not building with our heads, but with our hearts. Everyone gets to dream.”
Lyn continued, dragging a line through the dark volcanic sand so deep and wide the earth itself seemed to sigh under the weight of the thought alone. “This will not be a cart for refugees. This will be a Titan! A rolling bastion of indestructible basalt and meteor iron that will not follow the laws of the Ward, but dictate them!”
The hype spread like wildfire through a tinder dry forest. Silarias, whose excitement had made him a boiling mass of kinetic energy, bounced forward. His eyes glowed with the raw adrenaline of a waking sun.
“A forge!” he roared, slamming his new Battle Gauntlets together with a thunderclap that sent sparks flying into the dusk. “I demand a cathedral of fire at the heart of this monster! A place where the heat never dies, where I can feed my weapons with the liquid essence of the Ward itself!”
Ren and Miki looked at each other again, their small faces crinkling.
“Liquid essence?” Ren whispered uncertainly.
Nicola knelt down with them again, his voice a warm murmur against the roaring wind.
“He wants a very hot kitchen for his swords,” Nicola whispered playfully into their ears.
The children giggled, the heavy, confusing words of the adults melting away into pure excitement.
The excitement turned into a collective ecstasy. Cilla and Ren threw themselves into the dust beside the sketch, their voices tumbling over each other like falling rocks.
“A dojo of unprecedented proportions!” Ren cried, his fists slicing through the air. “A consecrated floor where we can train until the very foundations of the mountain tremble!”
Cilla’s eyes mirrored the distant horizon as her fingers marked a towering lookout point on the blueprint.
“A crows nest that pierces the clouds, so that not a single shadow, however divine or devilish, can creep upon us unnoticed!”
Even the otherwise stoic Aurelius and the razor sharp Jane let themselves be swept away by the vision. The blueprint in the black sand grew, branching and developing its own heartbeat. Meditation rooms appeared, bathed in the silvery, etheric light of Nyx. A dome of reinforced glass for Nicola’s laboratory where the Ether currents had free play took shape, followed by personal sleeping quarters, each breathing the unique, raw energy of the Nobodies.
Then Lyn’s gaze fell on Apollo and his horses, who were standing there with wildly rolling eyes, snorting against the golden twilight. A sensational, almost predatory grin spread across her face.
“And for speed, for the brute, divine power that will drag us through the mud and gold of this valley…” Her hand flew over the ground as she designed two gigantic mechanical monstrosities at the front of the fortress. “No simple carriage for you, Apollo! We are forging two colossal mechanical Trojans! Exo Clockwork Divine Forgery Armor that your horses will merge into. They will no longer be creatures of flesh and blood, but the roaring engines of a titan, clad in an impenetrable armor of divine smithing that moves fluidly to the rhythm of their gallop!”
Apollo stared at the design, his competitive spirit triggered to an all consuming boiling point. The horses seemed to grasp the grandeur of their new harness. They stomped their hooves so hard the rocks beneath them cracked. Lyn’s vision was a masterpiece of madness and ingenuity, a rolling throne that would force the wilderness to kneel.
The entire group stood in a circle around the gigantic sketch, the hype now as tangible as the static electricity before a storm. The adventure was officially no longer an escape. It had become an invasion of a new order.
“The resources are waiting down there!” Lyn shouted, her arm stretched out toward the deep, shimmering abyss of the Ward. “Meteor iron from the craters, basalt from the deepest veins, the living cores of the jungles! Who brings me the foundations of our dominion??”
The entire group looked where Lyn pointed. It was a natural beauty that no human eye was ever supposed to see. Gigantic trees, so ancient their roots seemed to hold the mountains themselves, were adorned with glowing tendrils that pulsed like nervous systems across the trunks. These tendrils emitted a soft, azure light that made the leaves glisten like emeralds.
But the most breathtaking sight was the temples. They were not built on the ground, but hoisted high upon the backs of the Grandfather Turtles. These titanic creatures, as large as villages, lay petrified in the valley like living islands. Their enormous carapaces served as foundations for temples of white basalt and gold, with roofs that seemed to float in the air.
“Look at those temples,” Cilla whispered, shielding her eyes with her hand. “It’s as if history has just lain down here to rest.”
The tendrils hanging down from the trees were not mere decoration. They connected the turtles to one another, a web of light that powered the entire valley. Between those temples and on the carapaces of the giants, the movement of the Menehurions could now be seen. They stood on the watchtowers of the temples, their horse heads raised high, while the little Mene spirits ran across the golden roofs to activate defense mechanisms.
It was a holy place that was about to become a battlefield. The smell of ozone and blooming jasmine mingled with the heat radiating from Silarias.
“They built temples on carcasses,” Nicola observed, his voice full of awe and a trace of dread. “That means this place doesn’t just contain resources. It’s a graveyard of the gods. Silarias, be careful. You are not just entering a mine; you are entering a relic.”
Silarias barely heard him. His eyes were focused on that deepest temple, where the most lights burned. That was where the core of the Titan lay.
“Then it’s time we woke history up,” Silarias said.
