Chapter 63 - CHAPTER 63: FROM PYRAMID LEGENDS TO THE CITY OF PULSING POWDER

“MAMBO 6…” Balamore growled, the sound coming from so deep in his chest that Miki and Jane felt the vibration literally resonate in their own bones. He closed his eyes and a raw stream of sounds burst from his throat, the words feeling like the grinding of obsidian on cold steel.

“K’uuch p’el u k’iinil… oox k’uh u t’aan… leti’e’ ka’an k’u’uk’ul ka’an!”

The words rolled like thunder over the battlefield, the s sounds hissing like a nearing snake and the hard k sounds seeming to split the air. Every syllable was a command to the earth itself, and with every cry, the iron totem on his shoulder vibrated more violently.

“T’uulul u muuk’il… ch’ab yéetel u pixan… Kukulkán!”

His pupils disappeared completely, giving way to a blinding and unholy purple light that sprayed from his eye sockets. On the iron rock, exactly between the different layers of ancient stone and cast metal, a dark purple fault line began to crack open. It was no longer light coming out, but a hungry and liquid energy that simply seemed to suck up the surrounding shadows.

Silarias stood rooted to the spot, his teeth grinding together as his veins pulsed with solar heat.

What kind of power is this?

he thought, his chest tightening under the sheer gravity of the aura expanding from the brothers.

It doesn’t just densify the air, it commands it. This isn’t just a technique, it’s an awakening.

Suddenly, something rose from the shadows of the two brothers that was so gigantic the sun itself seemed to darken. A giant Mambo snake covered with thousands of iridescent feathers that shone like oil on water coiled up from the ground with a hissing and thumping sound. The creature was monumental, a living symbol of rebirth and absolute death, and began to wrap itself around the brothers and their enemy with a slow, commanding grace. The feathers rustled against each other like thousands of razor sharp knives while the purple glow from the rock lit the snake from within, giving every scale a mystical life of its own. The Nobodies knew at that moment that they were no longer watching a simple fight, but the awakening of a primal force that would turn this corrupt temple and everything in it to dust.

Right in the middle of this suffocating aura, Miki’s eyes went completely wide. The sheer, overwhelming scale of the giant feathered serpent didn’t terrify her; it hit her inner child like a massive spark of pure hype. She practically jumped on her toes, her white hot pigtails flaring up with excitement.

“Whoaaa! Ren, look! Look at the giant snakey!” Miki squealed, pointing a trembling finger at the towering beast. “This is insane! Those feathers are glowing like a legendary endgame boss!”

Ren, hovering nearby with his straw rustling body kept lighter than air, balled his fists with a wide greed. “This is the craziest thing I have ever seen!” he cheered, completely swept up in the chaos despite the terrifying mountain of death right in front of them. “Those scales are literally deflecting all the shadows! Hey, giant snake, eat that ugly oil monster in one bite!”

“Yeah, leave nothing left of him!” Miki yelled back, stomping her foot so hard a tiny splash of orange lava erupted onto the gold floor. “Melt him down completely!”

Jane grabbed Miki firmly by her collar and yanked her back, struggling to keep her invisible pressure shield stable. “Miki, shut up and stay sharp! That thing will crush us by accident if you do not watch out!”

“But Jane, look how cool!” Miki pouted, though her eyes remained completely fixed on the spectacle.

Balamore’s iron totem vibrated so violently now that the metal began to sing, a dissonant, wailing sound that rivaled the hissing of the awakening Kukulkán. The monstrosity of black sludge and oxidized droids, trapped in Izamaro’s geometric cage, reacted with one last, desperate soul cry. It was a sound that came not from a throat, but from the corrupt core of the machine itself, a mechanical shriek of pure terror that made the air crack.

Imperturbably, the giant feathered Mambo snake began to raise its head. Between its wide open jaws, where iridescent feathers rustled like thousands of knives, a sphere of concentrated, poison green light began to form. The sphere was compact, but its intensity was so great that the surrounding air began to warp and hiss. It was no simple poison, but an extract of ancient decay, ready to reduce anything it touched to atomic dust.

In the background, far from the direct action, Nicola stood silent. His analytical brain had fully accepted the shocking truth. The ‘EUREKA’ shout had died down, replaced by a deep, reverent silence.

It’s perfect,

Nicola thought, as the geometric formulas raced through his mind so fast his temples throbbed.

Every step Izamaro takes cuts exactly through the axes of the cosmic matrix. He is not fighting the laws of nature, he forces them into a mold. This is absolute control.

With a silent agreement, the rest of the group began to position themselves.

“Everyone, occupy the grid points!” Nicola commanded, his voice sharp and clear through the noise. “We are the anchors now! Hold the line!”

They formed a perfect, centered circle around the monstrosity and the brothers, each on a corner of the invisible Flower of Life grid. Nyx stood there, her eyes glowing in a pure, blinding silver, feeding the scene with energy to strengthen their collective will. Apollo let out a deep, resonating howl from his chest, a rhythm that Miki and Jane followed instinctively, swaying their bodies to the cosmic melody.

“Hahaha, brother, do you feel that?! Hahaha, the gods are dancing and laughing at us!” Balamore’s voice was a raw growl, filled with bloodthirsty joy. Izamaro had stopped running and stood at the edge of the grid, the kinetic energy stored in his Quetzal Feather Boots making them glow so brightly the ground beneath him began to melt.

“Gods want dance… they get dance,” Izamaro spat, his teeth bared in a fierce grin.

He began to perform the Flower of Life dance again, but this time with a slow, commanding grace. Suddenly, Izamaro stopped. For a fraction of a second, the entire battlefield seemed to fade, replaced by a glimpse of another reality: towering pyramids bathed in golden light.

The hype hit its absolute peak. The group formed a human chain, locking arms to create a literal launchpad for the final strike.

“Hold tight!” Lyn roared, slamming her hammer into the ground with a dull thud to anchor the base of the chain.

Izamaro ricocheted against them, his speed doubling with every single touch. Silver and emerald sparks flew wildly as he bounced from one Nobody to the next, absorbing their kinetic momentum until he was nothing but a searing, blinding flash of pure velocity.

“NOW!!” Nicola and Silarias shouted simultaneously, their voices merging into one massive roar of command.

Izamaro launched himself from the last person in the chain, flying straight at the sphere of poison like a human meteor. With a perfect, danced movement, as if playing an ancient ball game, he kicked the sphere with maximum force.

“Choke on your own rust, piece of trash!” Izamaro screamed.

The poison green comet shot forward, absorbing shadows and growing in size as it traveled, tearing a vacuum through the very air.

The monster let out one last cry of acceptance as the comet struck. In an explosion that seemed to tear the very temporal structure of the temple, the creature burst apart in a surreal display of dissolving matter. The black sludge did not ignite in fire but instead surrendered to the impact, fracturing into millions of tiny soot particles that drifted slowly downward like a mourning veil. The remaining droids disintegrated into atomic dust, their metallic forms erased from existence. Kukulkán, the Mambo snake, dissolved into an iridescent rain of feathers that carpeted the ruined battlefield in a shimmering coat of emerald and gold.

The explosion was not the end, but a purification. As the millions of black soot particles descended, the suffocating atmosphere began to clear. The thick, leaden air drifted away like the vast, golden horizons of a distant realm; the darkness did not just retreat, it was replaced by an ethereal, heavenly light.

In that new silence, a sound began to swell. Not screaming, not metal on metal, but the delicate, crystal clear plucking of a harp. It was a celestial play that calmed the tremors in the bones of the Nobodies.

Then, for only a fraction of a second, they appeared. Between the falling iridescent feathers of the Mambo snake, the souls of the monks materialized. They were not shadows of pain, but pure, luminous essences. They stood there, serene and liberated, looking at the group. Without words, but with a slight bow and a hand to the heart, they expressed their gratitude for the liberation of their corrupt temple.

The plucking of the harp stopped abruptly. The silence that followed was broken by a single, dry handclap.

“Neat… exactly as it should be.”

The voice was calm, almost businesslike. A figure stood at the edge of sight, wrapped in a heavy, mysterious cloak that seemed to absorb all light. He made a move to throw off his cloak, as if finally wanting to reveal himself. But as the fabric slid from his shoulders, the wind caught it. Instead of falling to the ground, the cloth materialized away into the wind, disintegrating into thousands of sparkling ash particles that merged into the heavenly light.

The figure was gone. The monks were gone. And so was the curse that had once rested there.

The sky above the ruins finally cleared. The suffocating, black smoke of the battle drew back like a leaden curtain opening for a new act. What remained was a silence so charged it almost hurt the ears. A purified world. The Nobodies stood there, indestructible, with the two brothers at their side on a shield that now shone so brightly it reflected the first sunbeams back like lasers.

Slowly, like a floating fortress in a sea of glass, the colossal Bastion glided closer. It was a mechanical god claiming the horizon, its copper plates gleaming in the early morning brilliance. Hundreds of eyes from below stared at the spectacle. The survivors, the street boys, they stood there with open mouths. They looked at the rubble, at the brothers who looked like walking legends, and finally at the boy who had changed everything.

We actually pulled it off,

Silarias thought, looking at his still glowing fists.

We dragged a living myth right out of that basement.

The silence was only broken by the soft, rhythmic hum of the engines until Silarias reached out his hand and broke the stillness. “Are you guys coming with us, or where is the journey headed?”

The reaction was not what everyone expected. Balamore, the giant who just moments ago was crushing skulls with his bare hands and channeling a primal god, completely cowered. His massive, muscular shoulders trembled and his eyes grew large and moist, as if the hard shell of the warrior had suddenly burst open.

“Can we come along with you guys for a few days?” he whispered in a voice that did not fit his stature at all, clumsy and innocent like a small child asking for a favor. “Please?”

Izamaru rolled his eyes, but his hand rested firmly on his sword to hide his own trembling fingers.

Don't show weakness now, idiot,

Izamaru thought, trying to save his pride. “Fine then. A few days. No longer,” he declared loudly. “We must not lose sight of our goal, understood?”

Balamore gave no answer. He uttered a cry of pure release and lifted Izamaru up in a giant hug that sounded like the cracking of old wood.

“Thanks! Really chill! Thanks so much!” the giant cried out, nearly squeezing his brother flat while spinning him around in pure hype.

The gratitude quickly made way for a grimace of pure effort. “Wait a minute. I knew you were stubborn, little brother, but this weighs incredibly heavy. Did you put rocks in your boots or something?”

Nicola stepped forward and straightened his glasses with the precision of a surgeon. He looked at the gigantic, layered iron rock still balancing on the young warrior’s back and did the math in his head.

“If we do not include the emotional ballast?” Nicola asked dryly, his analytical glance sliding over the runes. “That rock of yours weighs a solid two tons. Not a gram less. Mathematically speaking, your spine should be completely shattered right now.”

Lyn burst into a laugh that echoed through the entire valley and slapped her knee hard. She pointed to the opened loading ramp of the Bastion, which hit the earth with a heavy thud and hissing steam. “Two tons? Listen very closely, Balamore! This Bastion can load eight hundred of those boulders without losing even a single kilometer per hour in speed! It is a moving mountain. Step in, big guy!”

The brothers did not know what hit them when they stepped over the threshold. It was like walking into another dimension, an impossible wonderland of cogs and magic. A world of gleaming copper, hissing steam, and corridors so large you could fit an entire army in them.

Balamore lost his composure completely now. The tough warrior stance crumbled into pure, ecstatic hype. He ran like a madman through the halls, his heavy steps making the steel floorboards sing like a massive drum.

“Look at that over there!” He ran past the smoking Forge, his mouth wide open in amazement. “And that!” He slid on his knees over the floor of the enormous Training Grounds, like he was a kid on a slippery kitchen floor. “What is this?! This is heaven!”

Izamaru tried to maintain his dignity as a master warrior, but his breath caught too. The absolute scale of the ship was an assault on his senses.

This cannot be real,

he thought, his heart pounding as he felt the underlying ether currents of the vessel.

A fortress that flies, forged from pure metal?

He began almost unconsciously to perform a rapid battle dance over the smooth floor of the arena, his movements fluid and sharp as if testing the grip of the steel. “Woah,” he muttered, breaking character completely for a moment while looking up at the endless ceilings. “It is a bit big, is it not?”

They were both so overwhelmed by the space and blinded by the shiny copper valves that they did not see each other coming at all. With the speed of an unstoppable force hitting an immovable object, they ran full tilt into each other at a blind corner.

The smack of their foreheads against each other was so hard that the acoustic shockwave was physically felt in the structural walls of the ship. Two tons of armored muscle slammed against the ground simultaneously with a sound like a falling anvil. They lay there stretched out, completely knock out, while their legs were still twitching in the air.

Silarias and Nicola walked up and looked down at the two unconscious bodies on the floor.

“Uhh, now what?” Silarias asked, blinking his eyes while scratching behind his ear. “Do we need to resuscitate them? Or call Lyn with an adjustable wrench?”

The rescue came in the form of a scent stronger than the unconsciousness itself. A sweet, warm waft of fresh pastry drifted through the ventilation shafts and filled the nostrils of the fallen legends. Nyx stood by the long oak table in the galley, her royal aura traded briefly for a simple kitchen apron. With a proud look, she set down an enormous cake that was still steaming from the heat, filled to the brim with the deep purple fruits from the Ward.

As if hit by a surge of electricity, both brothers shot straight upright in one motion, their eyes wide open.

FOOD!

Their magen roared so loudly in unison that the porcelain dishes on the table literally rattled.

“Got hungry?” Silarias laughed loudly, beckoning the rest of the group over. “We know that problem here. First eat, then talk. You cannot save the world on an empty stomach, and that goes for two tons of muscle as well. Attack!”

Around the table, in the warm heart of the Bastion, all walls fell away. While the bright sun fell through the thick glass windows, names were truly exchanged for the first time, cementing their bond: Silarias, Nyx, Jane, Aurelius, Miki, Ren, Cilla, Apollo, Nicola, and Lyn.

Miki and Ren could not take their eyes off the newcomers and sat practically on top of them without any personal space. Miki pointed a crumb covered finger at the strange, glowing patterns on Balamore’s clothing, while Ren reached out with an open mouth, touching the shiny, exotic feathers on Izamaru’s armor.

“Woah, this is really beautiful,” Ren whispered in pure admiration, his straw fingers rustling against the silver feathers. “It feels just like actual magic!”

Izamaru swallowed an enormous chunk of cake, wiped his mouth with the back of his hand, and opened into a genuine, loud laugh. His stern, battle hardened face suddenly became soft and accessible.

“We come from a land far from here,” he told them, his eyes beginning to gleam with pride for his heritage. “From Xul Takal, the Realm of the Golden Stairs. There stand pyramids that kiss the clouds and cities built entirely of gold. It lies deeply hidden in the jungle, where the sun is always perpendicular to the temples and where the earth itself seems to sing a continuous hymn of power.”

Balamore leaned even further forward over the table, his eyes shining like those of a storyteller by a campfire, gesturing wildly with a fork. “Xul Takal is not just any city,” he whispered loudly, carefully sweeping the last crumbs of the cake together into a small pile. “It is a place where the waterfalls are not made of water, but of liquid light that sings a beautiful melody when it hits the ancient rocks! The temples float a handbreadth above the ground, carried entirely by the prayers of the elders. It is a wonder of the world that makes the sun itself jealous every morning!”

The whole table fell silent, gripped by the vivid imagery.

A city with floating temples and golden stairs,

Nyx thought, her brain instantly visualizing the geopolitical layout of such a hidden realm. She sat on Silarias’s lap and unconsciously leaned forward in fascination, while Nicola, Lyn, Aurelius, and Jane cried out in perfect harmony: “And then?! Tell us more!”

Izamaru laughed softly, thoroughly enjoying the attention, and hushed the crowd with an upraised hand. “Tomorrow perhaps, or another time. A legend loses its luster if you eat it all at once. Plus, I need more cake for the next chapter.”

Balamore looked at Silarias with a mouth completely full of food, his cheeks bulging rounder than an overstuffed hamster. “Where are we going now?” he asked midway through chewing, spraying a few crumbs.

Everyone looked to the left at the same time. Nyx, closing her gold trimmed atlas with a sharp snap with the absolute precision of a queen, spoke the legendary words: “Cinderpulse City.”

Silarias jumped up from his chair and thrust his fist, which still held a piece of cake, straight into the air. “CIN…DER… CITY!” he shouted with a full mouth, his solar energy flaring up brightly for a moment.

Immediately the rest of the group followed the example, a chaotic chorus of hyped voices bellowing the name of the city through the dining hall while crumbs flew in every direction. “CINDER CITY! GOGOGO!” Miki and Ren screamed, high fiving each other over the table.

Nyx looked at them dryly, one eyebrow raised as she wiped a crumb from her atlas. “Yes, enjoy the shouting. We will be there in about three sunsteps.”

Nicola finished his drink in one big gulp and shot upward like a fired arrow, his tactical brain shifting straight into overdrive. “No! Not that fast! We are unprepared!” He began to run in circles, turned halfway around, grabbed Miki by her waist and pushed her straight into the arms of Lyn. “Three sunsteps is nothing! Hurry hurry! You ladies go straight to the bathhouses right now, we are going to fix ourselves up! We cannot enter a major city smelling like droid oil and swamp magic!”

Before anyone could react, Nicola sprinted away, taking Ren under his arm like a rugby ball. His voice echoed like a drill sergeant through the metal halls as they disappeared, with Aurelius walking in their wake trying to maintain some dignity. “Listen closely Ren, tiny invisible bugs live on your skin if you do not wash! They have little teeth! They make you sick, they eat you up from the inside!”

“Noooo! Not the skin bugs!” Ren shrieked in hyper panic, flailing his straw arms wildly as Nicola dragged him away.

Silarias looked at Apollo with a mischievous greed and gave him a nudge. “Three sunsteps… that’s shorter than you think!” They burst into laughter and dragged Balamore and Izamaru along by their arms, completely bypassing their warrior pride. “Don’t worry, men, we have special luxury robes for you to put on once you are completely scrubbed clean!”

As they walked through the grand halls, Silarias began to enthusiastically brag about his high end bath system. “Warm water antings in the taps, boys! Always steam, always luxury! It’s an S tier setup, I promise you.” He enthusiastically kicked open two large doors without looking and stuck his head right through. “Look at this, this is—”

“GO AWAY, PERVERT! WRONG DOOR!!” A deafening chorus of angry female voices screamed from inside the dense steam.

Jane and Nyx stood there, soaking wet and with bright red faces of pure fury. Before Silarias could even process his mistake or step back, he was pelted with a relentless barrage of wet towels, heavy loofahs, and hard bottles of soap flying at him at breakneck speed.

KLABAM!

His head popped back into the hallway as the doors slammed shut, sporting a massive, instantly swelling black eye.

Nicola flitted past at that exact moment, still with Ren on his shoulder. He braked so hard that friction sparks literally flew from his soles across the steel floor. He looked at Silarias's face. “Uhh, what did you do?”

Silarias rubbed his throbbing eye and groaned. “Uhh… nothing. I… my head, wrong door. Too much steam.”

Little Ren looked at Silarias from Nicola’s shoulder with wide eyes, utterly fascinated. “Silarias, what was in there? Was it the skin bugs? Did they bite your eye?”

Before he could finish his sentence, Nicola flitted away again, interrupting the little guy. “Haha, nothing for your ears, fart cannon! Move along!”

In the hallway, Silarias recovered his stance and saw Balamore still standing there, observing the entire embarrassing spectacle in absolute silence. “Uhh, hehe, sorry… I… tactical error,” Silarias muttered, clearing his throat.

Balamore looked at him incredibly seriously and crossed his massive arms. “I say nothing. Like the wise owl… smart but observing. For two extra pieces of cake, this conversation never happened.”

Silarias burst out laughing, his hype completely back, and started running down the hallway. “Deal! You can have as many as you want!”

They threw open the two enormous swinging doors of the actual men’s bathhouse. The space was gigantic, a technical masterpiece field with thick white steam and massive marble baths fed by hissing copper pipes. Everyone was already in swimming robes, splashing, bathing, and scrambling themselves clean.

Nicola was meanwhile busy aggressively scrubbing Ren clean. “Get well behind the ears, yes, really back there! Do not let that straw rot!”

Apollo nodded in agreement from his bath, relaxing completely. “Hygiene is half the battle, little one. A clean warrior is a deadly warrior.”

A while later, freshly washed and changed, they all stood in a straight row in the central chamber of the Bastion. A mysterious, heavy iron chest stood on the floor. Ren stared at it with wide eyes, leaned over to Apollo, and asked softly: “Can I try? Please, Apollo?”

Apollo rolled his eyes, but a loving smile played around his mouth. He reached into his gear, pulled out an enormous war horn made from the literal horn of a dragon, and solemnly handed it to the straw boy. Nicola and Lyn watched in surprise; this artifact was new even to them. Balamore and Izamaru exchanged an extremely questioning look.

Then it sounded. Ren took a deep breath, puffed out his chest, and blew on the horn with all his might. A mighty, roaring sound echoed through the entire frame of the Bastion, a deep, majestic vibration felt right down to the marrow of their bones. When the echoing roar finally stopped, Silarias took the floor. He began pacing back and forth with a serious, military stride, his hands behind his back.

“We have arrived somewhere safe again,” he began solemnly, his voice dropping into a commanding tone. “But now that we are actually entering a city, we must disguise ourselves. We are targets. Tradition dictates…”

Nicola and Balamore looked at each other, the realization hitting home instantly. “Ghost Cell,” they whispered at the exact same time.

Silarias burst into laughter, breaking his serious general act, and marched forward with total hype. “Our name is spreading like wildfire through the world. So, are you guys ready to go Ghost Cell?” He stopped marching abruptly, looked at the entire group, and thrust his arm straight into the air. “Let’s get the party started!”

He kicked the heavy chest open with a loud

BOEM

. It was completely full of varied clothing, cloaks, and gear designed to make them utterly unrecognizable. There was something for everyone, but for one man, the choice was already predetermined. The brightly colored poncho and the massive, wide brimmed sombrero resting right at the top of the pile seemed to almost whisper:

“Wear me, Apollo… claim your destiny.”

Apollo picked up the garments, and a wave of pure, dramatic emotion crossed his face as he ran his fingers over the fabric. The heavy chest fell shut with a dull thud, and the new disguises were swiftly put on.

The atmosphere inside the Bastion’s exit chamber was charged to the absolute limit, a thick mixture of tactical nerves and pure, unadulterated adrenaline. Silarias walked up to the enormous mechanical doors of the main exit, his hand firmly clamped around the cold iron handle.

This is it,

he thought, his heart hammering against his ribs.

A whole new territory.

He looked back one last time at his group, the Ghost Cell, who now looked completely unrecognizable, mysterious, and menacing in their new rogue disguises.

“Ready for it?” he asked, his voice cracking slightly with the intense tension.

Without waiting for an answer, he pulled the heavy handles down and threw the doors open with a brutal, dramatic yank.

The world that revealed itself before their eyes was an absolute euphoric fever dream of color, sound, and light. Cinderpulse City did not just lie there on the horizon; it actively pulsed like a living, breathing heart, a city caught in a permanent state of festive madness and architectural pride.

Everywhere they looked, strange houses rose from the ground, built like monumental clay mortars. The roofs were sharply conical and ended in pointed, polished copper tips that looked exactly like giant fireworks fuses, ready to pierce the sky and detonate. The walls of the structures were clad with overlapping sheets of treated metal that soaked up the flickering, warm light of the streetlamps and spat it back out into the darkness in dazzling, psychedelic patterns.

The sky above them was never empty for a single second. It was a constant, beautiful expression of violence. Splendid flowers of liquid fire burst apart in the stratosphere, raining down in cascading showers of shimmering gold, emerald, and ruby upon the pointed copper roofs. It was a form of visual violence that utterly numbed the senses.

Below, in the narrow, winding cobblestone streets, an infectious ecstasy reigned supreme. Dense crowds of people moved in a surging, rhythmic stream, their faces entirely hidden behind vibrant masks woven from fresh flowers and intricately painted skulls. It was a city that laughed directly in the face of transience, while the grand preparations for the festival held the streets in a beautiful state of siege.

Everywhere you looked, heavy wooden carts squeezed through the celebrating crowd, filled to the brim with black barrels of active gunpowder that thundered heavily over the stones. They drove dangerously close to fragile decorations of silk and paper that would turn to instant ash at the smallest stray spark. The air was incredibly thick and heavy, sweet with the rich scent of caramelized sugar, thoroughly mixed with the piercing, metallic waft of burning powder.

Silarias took his first step outside onto the ramp, and the rest of the Ghost Cell followed closely behind, squinting their eyes against the bright, dancing glare reflecting in their pupils. The city was a beautiful, roaring monster that breathed in fire, glitters, and smoke; a place where death was not feared, but instead drenched in so much neon light that the shadows had nowhere left to hide.

Cinderpulse City lay right at their feet. The night was young, and the powder was bone dry.
